Yes they are. The neighborhoods I posted are more conveniently located, are more luxurious, have more architectural character, and cost less.

And nothing can make up for the shitty Chicago winter. What good is anything when it's so damn cold and windy that your always inside during the winter.

Eh, Chicago has super high taxes and is cold and snowy. Honestly I don't know why it hasn't joined Detroit and the rest of the midwest into turning into a slum. Maybe soon enough. There was a guy here not too long ago that said he lost 100k on his condo in the Chicago area.

SF is kind of a strange place. The weather alone makes it better than Chicago though. As others mentioned there are plenty of other places out there that are nice and don't have snow. You don't have to go to Cali for that.

The coastal stretch between Santa Barbara and Lake Tahoe is pretty nice...with the Bay Area/Berkeley in the middle of it all. Yes, it is very nice. If you can afford it.
The view of the ocean from Lake Tahoe is breathtaking.

If you can live in SF for $800/month and don't mind the living situation, that is an incredible deal. Take it and enjoy an awesome city for a few years.

What part of SF is your dad's place?

He lives in Alameda.

People yap about "oh we got a beach and blah blah." How many of those people can afford to live on the beach? Hardly none.

Aren't there people who live 10-20 minutes from the beach and don't have to pay anything more than say 300k-400k? Because that would be perfectly fine. A lot on LI are here for the beaches. And the proximity to everything NYC has to offer. You can get that even for $350k as long as you don't care about a great school district.

I'm curious what's out there (nice, affordable, and close to the coast) to grow old in as once our kids are older we'd like to try the left coast at least once in our life.

Yes, but Long Island is dreadfully boring. A giant suburb and a million miles from Manhattan, which is mindbogglingly expensive.

And yes you can pay $300k in LA, for a studio apartment.

No, California needs to get it's act together. Stay away, you've been warned. I grew up there.

You're telling me there's nowhere along that whole coastline that has beaches 20 minutes from a nice suburb that is affordable (< $500k)?

Nowhere near a major city, no. Unless you're talking a small 1 br apartment.

Remember though, 20 minutes in CA traffic means less than 3 miles.

^ I guess I was just dreaming when my brother lived on Mission Village Drive in SD. Traffic there was overrated.

House or condo? The latter is doable. House...a bit harder.

Probably fine to visit or work part of the year, but wouldn't plan on staying there permanently. I left in November. Just sick of the f'ing LA traffic and high prices, looking to buy a house.

This is about what I could afford with a 30min-1hr commute in LA. Built in the 1930s, 835 sqft, complete shit hole: http://www.trulia.com/property/3132180093-1550-W-Colegrove-Ave-Montebello-CA-90640#photo-1

This is what I could easily afford out here in Indiana. Built in 2013, 2,450 sqft, beautiful home: http://www.trulia.com/property/3121512075-5515-Covington-Dr-Charlestown-IN-47111#photo-1

According to Google, that's about 5 miles, straight line, from the ocean. About 12 miles on the street. Probably an hour drive during rush hour.

Furthermore, SD is one giant suburb. Like Phoenix with an ocean.

Have you ever been to CA? It depends on time of day but I can make it to Newport from Fullerton in 20-25 minutes...takes about an hour around 5 or so but still isn't the end of the world.

Yeah, because everyone in CA goes to the beach during rush hours.

Hey JMapleton, I know I asked you this throughout the years, but I don't think I've ever gotten an answer, but, do you still live with your parents?

The canyons really break up the city so it does actually feel like a lot of communities. It's not at all like the Charlie Brown backdrop that is the 101 loop in Phoenix.

Have you ever lived in or even visited California? You have no fuckin clue!

Traffic in Silicon Valley/Bay Area/SF is not that bad, sure its, bad but no major city is without significant traffic now-a-days.

Austin has the 4th worst traffic in the nation, Seattle is the 8th worst, DC 9th, Boston 10th.

San Diego is not in the top 10.

I do not. I'm 30 years old. But what makes you ask?

Let me guess, LA is #1, and SF/SJ #2. It's a problem for sure.

We visited SoCal in December and while the weather was awesome every day, you could literally see the smog.

If you could minus the smog, I'd probably live there 2-3mos /yr if I could.
