Probably fine to visit or work part of the year, but wouldn't plan on staying there permanently. I left in November. Just sick of the f'ing LA traffic and high prices, looking to buy a house.

This is about what I could afford with a 30min-1hr commute in LA. Built in the 1930s, 835 sqft, complete shit hole: http://www.trulia.com/property/3132180093-1550-W-Colegrove-Ave-Montebello-CA-90640#photo-1

This is what I could easily afford out here in Indiana. Built in 2013, 2,450 sqft, beautiful home: http://www.trulia.com/property/3121512075-5515-Covington-Dr-Charlestown-IN-47111#photo-1

You can live cheap in many places. The problem is that you have to live in that area... You couldn't pay me to live in Indiana.

Sometimes you have to pay to get things of higher quality. Who cares how big your house can be if you live in a crappy state/location? You are simply trying to justify the fact that you cannot afford to live in a more desirable area. Of course your friends who also can't afford the better area will be saying the same thing.. No one likes to admit failure.

Depends on where you land. LA is a mess, as is most of SoCal. Norther Call (north of the Bay area) is completely different from the southern half. Would I live anywhere else? No. Within eight hours I can be in alpine wilderness, low desert, gorgeous Pacific coastline, or rolling pasture, teeming city or as alone as I could possible be. Where else can you do that in the U.S.?

8 hours? Pshh here in Socal you can go to the desert, mountains, and beach all within those 8 hours.

Thanks for write up AViking. Really insightful. To your point, much of the appeal of San Francisco is the ability to enjoy nature. It's hard to get motivated to go outside and enjoy life when it's -15 degrees with a foot and a half of snow.

For better or worse my commute would not involve a car. Rather, I would travel on a plane to a client location somewhere every other week and work from home every other week. I'm trying to make this work on roughly $80K which may be a slight strech.

It's hard to move back once you've sold. It's not necessarily the cost o f the housing, but it's the amount of house you get for the price when compared to elsewhere.

to the OP: It's going to cost a lot more than $900/month. You're going to love the price and quality of fresh produce. The women, too. So those costs are going to add up. Oh, and a Chicago GF and a SF GF means twice the number of gifts.

Maintaining 2 residences isn't cheap. Are you going to have 2 cars? How much stuff will you have to shuttle back and forth? It's just like the answer to the question of "Should I move to CA?"

"Yes, if you can afford it." Who cares if housing is expensive and taxes are high if you can afford it?

The difference between moving here and what I'm trying to do is that I don’t want my primary residence to be California. In a sense, I’m trying to have my cake and eat it to by avoiding the Midwest winter and still enjoying Chicago during the rest of the year.

I would keep my car back in Chicago and rely on biking, public transit, and zip car to get around. Ideally I'd like to keep the stuff brought to the basics like my computer and a month or so of clothes.

Every time I've been to San Diego it's been fantastic. Just a beautiful city and the weather is just right. I'd happily live there.

My friend moved from Providence RI to San Diego CA. It's been about 6 months now.. I'm pretty sure he said he's never coming back...

Chicago summers are amazing. People have been living through hell during the winter and the city comes alive in the spring and summer.

You don't need 150k to live in Los Angeles. No money mo problems.

(It sure does help though)

If you don't want to live the ghetto you do(IMHO).

Would you really send your kids to East Valley High Ns1?

I don't think the salary would be a problem, it's finding renters for such short periods of time. I'd just go in assuming that won't happen and work the numbers from there.

Everyplace has its own good and bad side.

Decide what you like best and go where they have it.

Yeah but that's waaaay out in the suburbs. You're 15 miles from the Loop.

That's still better than neighorhoods filled with hundreds of these:

http://www.socaprobate.com/images/CA_house_Small.jpg

nothing different than any other soulless suburb throughout the country. no one cares.

the fascinating thing about the East Bay in particular, is that it is completely different from this. At least in Berkeley, every single house looks very different. block after block after block.

Define "average" people first and then I will show you one.

Note: Don't say "people who make $30k a year," that's not average, especially in a big city.

It's very doable, even out here. You simply have no perspective.

As long as you can tolerate the massive collective and individual egos of a giant mesh of douche-bag extraordinaires in their own mind, by tolerate I mean ignore, you'll be hard pressed not to find satisfaction with the environment and weather.

It's not that you're an asshole if you live in California, it's just that a ton of fucking assholes are here. Mostly on the motorways, but they are busy yupping it up everywhere. The kind of folks, and i've heard it more the once from some real uppities, think their shit (literally) is better than others.

Oh, I agree with this, 100%

Here is a 1-bedroom in a not so great area - but remember our hood is not nearly as bad as Chicago's hood.

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/apa/4325197093.html

Well, I've lived in Chicago for a few years. I was paying ~$800/month in one of the better (meaning: fun) neighborhoods (Lakewood) for a 1 BR.

Those extreme south Chicago neighborhoods where crime is truly bad, though, that is barely Chicago, tbh. You might as well be in Winetka.

Would you really send your kids to East Valley High Ns1?

You can find non-ghetto housing while making 150k in the following cities: Pasadena, NoHo (the side closer to Toluca Lake), San Gabriel Valley (which for purposes of this thread can include City of Industry/Hacienda Heights), Arcadia (the side farthest away from San Marino), etc.

If I was trying to send a kid to school in SoCal, I'd move to Arcadia-ish or somewhere in OC (Costa Mesa, "south" OC, Fountain Valley, hell even Irvine is doable).

Caveat: Move =/= buy a house.

To directly answer your question: I live around the corner from EVH, and no I probably wouldn't want my kids to go there.

Exactly. I currently live very close to EVH as well. Generally, the nicer the area the better the schools.

That's why we're looking for houses in Burbank and West Hills/Woodland Hills.

No arguments there, but you don't need 150k to live in those areas (it just helps - a lot.)
