Is cheating as common in college?

I mean, cheating is rampant in HS. The slightest deficiency of the teacher's attention yields low whispers, the quiet swishing of papers on binders on the floor, people texting each other answers, and so on.

Is it the same at universities, in your experience?

It depends to some extent on what school you are going to and what classes you are taking. But I am going to say yes overall.

If you think everyone does their homework individually outside of class in college...not so much. However, cheating on tests/quizzes is quite hard since there are T.A.'s and the professor around...most of the time

A lot of college students cheat, I'm sure of that. They're getting pretty high-tech and real good at it, too.

Depends on the school, class, and people in it.

I had some classes where if you did not cheat you would fail and even the most honest people caught on real quick. While other classes you get turned in.

Some based on the teacher some on the class and so forth. But with college if its a class where little to nobody cheats and you get caught you can get kicked out of school.

Everyone cheats, rendering college a worthless endeavor.
Save your money, and go into business for yourself. Build a better mousetrap. . .

It would require brass balls to cheat at the college I went to. Most Professors had the rule if they saw a cell phone during a test you got an F for the class. Also, anyone caught cheating would be expelled from school and have all previous grades revoked so you would basically have to start over (If you could get into a college with "academic dishonesty" on your transcripts).

However, on homework it was pretty common and accepted that you would help each other outside of class and I wouldn't really call that cheating (and neither did any professor I had).

Cheating happened all the time at my school. This reminds me of one of the most hi-tech ways I have heard about cheating at school. My friend's roomate, along with one of his friends, were in the same class. For the final they both went in with earpieces connected to some sort of two way radio, and they stored the mic's in their sleeves. While taking the test they would rest their head on their hand and whisper answers back and forth to each other. I thought that was a pretty ingenious way to cheat.

It is harder to cheat in college. In high school I constantly cheated on tests, quizzes, and homework assignments. Most of my courses in college involve critical responses to questions where you have to show an understanding of the material. I have become a master bullshitter, able to skip the reading and pick out a few lines here or there to quote and make an A+ essay, so in a way I'm not completely ethical with my education but I'm not cheating. I think it is like that for mot liberal arts majors, whether or not you cheat probably depends a lot on what you study.

In lower level classes it was pretty common - i.e intro c++/lib arts/assembly. In upper level classes people ask you for help and if you can't explain it or can't see what they're talking about you look like a dumbass. One time I saw a prof catch a pretty big group of people cheating on a signals and systems test - he took them out into the hallway and bitched at the morons pretty loudly.

it's hard to cheat on all-essay tests... as an english major, plagiarism was dealt with pretty harshly, though. you'd have to be insane to risk it; plagiarism was punished with getting kicked out of the department.

I def. remember people copying each others answers from homework/busy-work, but I don't remember any major cheating on exams (although a lot of profs gave multiple exams -- especially for scantron stuff, they might just have different versions of the same tests but different question orders so that you couldn't just copy the black dots on someone else's paper)

How could there be a class where you have to cheat to pass? That doesn't make sense.

So if you do well and do good on assignments and such, but you didn't cheat does the professor just say "Hey, you did good but I never saw you cheating, so I'm giving you an F." WTF?

could be a professor with wildly unrealistic expectations and willing to fail an entire class before reevaluating his own teaching style of putting it on a curve.

I never saw such blatant cheating during tests in college (of course when I went to college hardly any students had cell phones). Most of what I saw was people copying old papers (turnitin and other services like that weren't around or popular) and borrowing old tests from previous students (which many people don't think is cheating, and that's fine as long as the professor agrees that it isn't cheating).

professor's would never do such a thing....it must be the students fault!

Cheating on stupid busy work assignments? 100%
Cheating on tests? ehhhh depends on the test. Impossible to cheat on a written math/essay test but a scantron full of bs definitions and dates is easily cheatable.

Not related to the question but I always found it amusing that if colleges actually caught and enforced their no cheating policy to it's fullest extent basically the entire school would be expelled for cheating at some point.

I am a professor and I see cheating all the time. I usually am pretty lenient on homework, unless it is a cut and paste using a word processor. My homework is worth only 10% of the total grade.

I absolutely will go after any student cheating on my tests though. Its pretty hard to do so, as my tests are all long answer and I pass out different versions of the test - so cheating is pretty hard to do. I've only had one incident in 10 years of teaching during a test.
