Wow, people sure are generous for such a small gesture!

Gender! Say gender! Not sex.

ROFL, I didn't actually read what I posted till now.

I picked up that trait from my dad. I always hold the door open for a woman, always. Once this backfired the same when I was a kid. This lady went off saying the same crap.
My dad replied, "I'm sorry, I mistook you for a lady."

I've only had this happen once. She started yapping so I just let the door go and let it close on her mid-sentence. I don't waste my time paying attention to such people. Almost everyone appreciates it and almost everyone says thanks. The people who don't are just miserable douches.

I hold the door open for men also, unless it's to get into a deli and it would allow them to get in line ahead of me.

I've only had this happen once to me. Unfortunatly, she make the remark before she walked through the door. I slammed the door shut before she could pass through it and she walked into it.
The up side was, she then realized her mistake, laughed about it and remarked "I guess that's what I get for being a jerk".
I opened the next door for her, she walked though and said "Thank you" and went on her merry way.
Luckly, I have no idea who she was....

Chivalry is not dead, but some people aren't very nice. Believe me, for every bitchy woman that gets upset by this, there's a prick guy who wouldn't even think of opening the door in the first place.

Bottom line, you were polite and a gentleman, she was impolite and rude. Any way you cut it, you came out ahead and she behind.

i had a gal pal who was like that when a guy held the door open for her & such. yep, she gave the same BS diatribe about feminist equality as well. but she had......<drum roll>......issues.

i pretty much hold the door open for whomever's behind me (gender irrelevant)...and it's funny 'cause guys always give me the strangest look (read = surprise), then they thank me for doing so.

I generally try to hold the door open for anyone, and say "thank you" to anyone who does it for me. However, I do admit that I put in more effort if it's a woman. If someone went off on me, I'd tell them to eff off and walk away; I'm too slow to think up a witty response.

As for young people not doing it anymore, it's true. I see it less and less in kids younger than me.

IF you're trying for politeness, you should make an effort to hold the door open for either gender. End of story. Luckily most people are giving that answer, but it's unfortunate to still see a few BS "It's showing proper respect to a lady" or "It's the gentlemanly thing to do" answers.

If you make an extra special effort to do it for a chick, I don't agree with that at all. Women are just as capable of opening a damn door as men. Only making a real effort if it's a chick is disrespectful to both men AND women.

OP I'm assuming you're in the "I hold it open for everyone" camp as well, in which case you shouldn't be the slightest bit embarrassed because she's a raging bitch. If you were holding it open specifically because she was a girl "to show proper respect" or whatever, then you're still not a jerk, you're just a decrepit dinosaur whose ideas are unfortunately more than a little behind the times.

Is it really that odd for guys to hold doors open for guys? I always do it, no one ever looks suprised. And most of the time if a guy is in front of me he checks to see if anyone if behind him and holds the door for me. Maybe its just where I live, dunno.

Wow...never had anything like that happen to me and I do hold doors open...for both sexes.

What to say in such a situation? Well there is always the classic, "What has you in such a foul mood? Gynecologist pull the wrong tooth?" or maybe "I am just trying to be fair, I hold the door open for women 70% as much as I do for men and I am a little behind today." (equal pay joke in case you are wondering)

I've gotten a negative comment once. I don't remember the words but I was definitely taken aback. I've gotten evil looks a few times as well. Equally insulting is when you hold the door open for someone and they don't even acknowledge your presence, let alone thank you. I usually give them a "you're welcome" after they pass...

And yes, I do put a little more effort into my door holding when it comes to women. Its not because I think they're weak or I'm trying to hold them back in society, its just because its a nice thing to do, and being heterosexual, a smile from a woman is worth more than a smile from a guy.

Next time feel free to slam the door in her face, or hold it open for a guy then let it slam for her. I tend to hold the door no matter who it is, but if they're enough of a douche to go off on you for trying to be nice to them, then let them fend for themselves from now on.

i'm not sure.... i've seen it countless times where guys hold doors open for other dudes, as well as women. i'm relaying MY experience (as a female) that when i hold the door for a guy, more often than not, they have this surprised look for like a second & then spew out a thanks. now, for women...different story...half the time they'll thank me otherwise they won't say anything at all (at which pt, i'll be thinking "biatch").
