Is Crysis worth buying for Multiplayer?

I figure i'd play through the singleplayer game once. I'd only consider it worth it to purchase if there's replayability and typically that only happens with multiplayer for me.

So is the multiplayer worthwhile? Are there lots of people playing? Are there mods coming out? etc. etc. etc.

Thanks!

I think the single player game is worth playing at least twice.

It is such an open ended game that you can do a lot of things different the second time. Change the paths you take etc.

Multiplayer.... only if your into modding, making maps, trying new things, etc. Then it would be worth it. Crysis is a big hacking cess pool from what I gathered the last time I played online.

If you find a good server with fair admins, you can have a lot of fun. Hacking isn't a problem on admin enforced servers. However, this game isn't very friendly to newbs and if you don't know what you're doing, you'll probably get spawn killed a lot and quit. I used to love the mp, but patch 1.2 and the fact that all the admins on the most popular US server are douches made me finally quit after a few months.

Single Player is very good. Multiplayer is lame. You can at least play through Single Player 2 or 3 times.

TFT2 is a totally different experience from Crysis mp. I don't think there's a game on the market that offers an mp as open as Crysis, though BF2 comes close but is a slower and more tactical game. There are dozens of ways to kill the enemy besides just shooting them. But the openness could be why a lot of people don't like it.

Wow... I'm finding myself wanting to agree with ProfJohn! (I must've clicked away from P&N) There's a first time for everything, including all the different ways you can fight your way through the single-player. To me that's more exciting than multiplayer for a while - I tend to enjoy the immersiveness more than the deathmatch style playing.

Single Player has a lot of replay value especially if you try the Sanbox 2 editor and make your own content/maps/missions. The multi-player is decent, but I've seen better (UT, Quake come to mind, along with TF2 and Battlefield series).

there seem to be a lot of 3rd party maps over at the crymod.com forums.

and if you ever want to create your own SP/MP maps or modify the games' SP maps, sandbox2 makes a lot of things easier compared to other editors.
additionally, Being able to instantly play test your map via control+g is an excellent feature.

The multiplayer is not bad, it's actually pretty fun but it's not worth buying the game JUST for that, however, the game is very well worth the purchase not only for a very engrossing single player experience (in my opinion though many people beg to differ) but for some serious eye candy as well, yeah I admit it, eyecandy does make a game more pleasant and entertaining.

I loved the SP

It's worth buying for messing around in the SandBox editor alone. The SP campaign and all the mods in development are only icing on the cake.

It's funny, Ponti, that we both liked Stalker, yet disagree on Crysis. I found the games fairly similar in terms of immersion and fun.

Crysis has it's upsides and it's downsides (judging from the demo)

AI is hard, but it cheats. So people who got sick of strolling through HL2 looking at daisies while "hardest" enemies shot at potted plants 20 feet away from them might like it. People who like stealth will be disappointed (at least in the demo level) since cover is 100% useless, cloaking is 99% useless, and staying a mile away prone with silencer = godmode. The game looks good, but level looks are certainly not creative (Bioshock on the other hand looked good, was creative, and ran on 1/10th the machine Crysis requires due to clever level implimentation). Weapon mechanics (of the four I've used) were horrible. They were NOTHING like actual gun use. Damage and accuracy didn't recreate anything close to any gun in existance... and there was almost no reason to use anything other than your starting rifle unless it was out of ammo. Shotgun didn't even require aiming. If they were on your screen and less than 15 ft away from you, guess who's dead? Pistol might as well have been a slingshot. Chest shots from it did ~ 10% damage to the enemies.

Different guys like different things in Shooters. I like weapon mechanics that are realistic and damage formula's that are fair and logical (not necessarily realistic). Crysis fails hard on both of those levels. If you're looking for arcade style dynamics where the combat's mostly about who has the bigger gun, then I can see it's appeal. I like those games, but not in 3d.

You make valid points about uninspired level design, but I found cover and cloakign to be very useful, and long range silenced sniping to be useless. The weapon damage was perhaps a little weak, but enemies who weren't wearing body armor still dropped like flies. I played through on Delta and pretty much stuck to close combat and ambushings. I liked how if I was caught in the open by a group of soldiers, I was dead.

After my first time through, I edited some config files to give me unlimited energy and boosted suit abilities. Combining that with dozens of extra enemies I added makes for quite a bit of fun.

edit: that fucking chopper hunting me through the trees pissed me off though. It was pretty cool having trees getting cut down all around me though.

MP is solid and they clearly put a lot of effort into it. There are better options out there, however. Like BF2.
