Right now I'm using the stock Buffalo firmware, and well I don't like it that much. So I read up on DD-WRT and looks great. I'm wondering what people think about it, how easy it is to manage and port forward, and how reliable it is. Should I use it?

Thanks.

im not well versed in networking, but i have that router with the dd-wrt firmware and as far as reliability is concerned, it's rock solid.

i use it for my computers and xbox live (including streaming video from my computers to my xbox) and it's been great for everything.

ddwrt is an awesome firmware, best I've seen. It gives you pretty much every option that you could want for a router. As far as reliability, well, I've had a router turned on now for over a year straight, not a single hiccup.

the stock buffalo fw is a terrible pain to work with. Requires reboots for every change that you make. 30 minutes after turning on my brand new router, it had ddwrt on it.

While on WRTS54G DD-WRT is better in general than the stock firmware, that is Not the case with the Buffalo.

The Buffalo's stock Firmware is very solid and there is No reason to change it unless you need features that are added by DD-WRT.

Yeah, it takes few seconds more to readjust after changes, but Router's changes are Not a Game, you do not manipulate it few times a day.

I just acquired a Linksys WRT54GS and now it's running DDWRT micro v23, it's acting as a Wireless Client Bridge. No issues so far. My only advice is to read AND understand fully the steps and expected results. During the flash process, be patient and let the router do it's thing.

If Tomato is available for Buffalo routers I suggest that over DD-WRT. DD-WRT is very flaky and I have had to reboot it many times in a row just to get the DHCP server to start handing out IP's. Tomato is ROCK SOLID and have never had any issues at all.

Yes, Tomato is available on the Buffalo routers and I have been running it on my G54S since September or so -- works much better than DD-WRT for me

I have a old WRT54G that runs DD-WRT. I dont use it in my network. But i take it places and let friends use to run client bridges and steal wifi. Works well when i have used it. Also used it on a multi state trip running a moving car to car wifi network for gaming and sharing files, worked well All the way up I-95 driving at about 75mph. As long as the other cars were about a quarter mile away or less it worked well.

I am just curious Mr. Olsen.

Is posting on the Internet for the whole world to see that you are Stealing WIFI, and drive 75mph is a smart thing to do?

Well considering connecting to open WIFI is not a crime and the speed limit on I-95 is 70mph, yeah, I don't see problem with it.

Not to mention I was not driving.

QoS actually works
Doesn't freeze up if you run a torrent
has cool graphs to track your bandwidth usage

I like Tomato, but then I found out it was the issue my Wii and iMac could not get an IP address over wifi. I've switched to ddwrt and haven't had any issues since. Sitting on a v2 Linksys WRT54G

Did you try static IP's with either the Wii or iMac?
