my old Dell 15" didn't have a degauss function. But I have done it on my new KDS 19", only like once a week maybe. No problems so far. I know at work and school I'd do it like once every 10 minutes just for "cheap thrills"..

Check your manual, some will tell you not to degauss more than X number of times in a certain time period, such as no more than 1 degauss per 30 minutes (Samsung SyncMaster 750p).

You only need to deguass when you move it or change it orientation. Deguassing is meant to adjust the monitor to the earth magnetic field. Once adjusted you don't need to do it agian.

hey Vinnie, your a really nice guy . You are the only guy who replied to all my posts, anyways, I don't see a difference if I or if I don't degauss, just nice colors. But afterwards, there is no visual difference. :|

Every time the AC is turned on for the monitor, it automatically degausses itself, just like a TV. They added manual degauss because some monitors were never turned off and would gradually develop green or purple spots from never being degaussed

Some, if not most monitors will degauss themselves when you switch them on. You can tell by the noise it makes when its just switched on. If you're using one of these monitors, and you don't keep your computer on 24-7(or for long periods of time), or you don't move it around a lot of bring it to contact with magnetic objects, you don't really need to worry about degaussing. Perhaps once in a while, but definitely not frequently.

Hymy,

There are other reasons to degauss a monitor. Over time, stray magnetic fields will magnitize the metal parts of the monitor. The electron beam that draws the screen is steered by magnetic fields. The stray fields will miss guild the beam and cause the monitor to go out of focus and the colors to get messed up (In the worse case). In the world we live in, there are tons of stray magnetic fields, so the monitor will need to be degaussed on occasion. How often? It all depends. The fact that manufactures are making the monitor degause itself everytime it is turned on should give a hint.

My Optiquest says not to do it more than every 20Min. I always thought it seemed to be bad for it. I have a friend who does it every 5 seconds to the monitors at school. He likes the pretty colors.

Stefan,

It'll give you pretty colors if you crack the CRT while it's on. But, only for a brief moment.

Damn magnetic field is so big, it effects my GS790 right next to it....

According to the manual of my old monitor it shouldn't be done more than once a month. Pretty strange.

This new one I don't know, how can I tell if it degausses itself?

since 90% of us at some point during the week turn off our PC's, there really is no need for it
