Is DVI really necessary?

I am about to buy a cheapish 17" LCD and I need help. I had my mind set on the samsung 910N, but some have commented on the lack of DVI. The 910T is the exact same with DVI.

The 910T is considerably more expensive than the 910N, so this is pretty important. I am still leaning towards the 910N, but can anyone give me a good reason to go for the DVI ON THIS PARTICULAR MONITOR. I realize overall that DVI has better quality, but I have heard that the analog does not hinder the quality on the 910N. Any ideas?

Thanks!

It is $120 more. I am starting college in the fall an dI am trying tosave as much money as possible. My massive CRT just isn't going to work.

Also, I just found a good deal on the 730B. It is the 8ms one. I see it for only $250 AMR at circuit city. This has DVI and everything. Seems like a great deal. Any opinions?

Edit: My bad, it was the 17" 730B (not 930). Still seems like a good deal. Better response time and DVI for jut a little more...

I don't know, for a person with an epox motherboard you might not notice the difference..

Yeah, the 930B would be just fine. I just think that DVI is essential for an LCD. I wouldn't bother running one with VGA unless it was reallllly cheap.

Yeah, the difference between DVI and VGA on most LCDs is striking. Personally, it's an essential feature.

Sorry, it was the 730B at circuit city... It is the 17", 8 ms one with DVI, still seems like a good deal though.

Ya, DVI on LCD's is a must in my opinion. The deal with DVI vs VGA is that using DVI, you get a straight digital signal from your vid card to the monitor with no distortion. Going VGA, the digital signal from the vid card is converted to an analog signal, sent thru the VGA cable, then converted back into a digital signal so the LCD can display it. That introduces some distortion on the display signal. Although LCD's have improved drastically on this, I still would spend the extra time finding another monitor that has DVI input on it. The difference is definately noticable.

Sounds good. I am going to staples now to have a look at the 730B and test it out...

Do they all come with the DVI cable? My Dell did, but i've heard some do not come with the cable. Might be something to consider if you narrow it down to a couple monitors that are fairly close in price.

If money is your primary concern, just wait a bit and get a Dell 1905FP on sale when it goes down to around $250-#300 or so (no deals right now, but expect some soon). It is cheaper than the 910T and even has a better response time (20ms vs. 25ms, assuming both specs are accurate in the real world), so for me there really isn't any contest.

OK, I took a look at the 730B. It looked decent, but I couldn't do much with it. The guy at staples hooked it up to some cheap-ass (no name) laptop, so I could only look at the text through an analog connection. I asked if I copuld bring in my PC and try it out, but he only said "probably not". Whatever, I wouldn't buy it from there anyways...

It still looked much better than the opther models they had available (most were no-name brands).

I've heard good things about the 1905FP as well. How often will the rebates roll around? Am I just going to have to search the HD forum everyday until they hit? If they are superior to the samsungs and can be had for around $250, I will definately take a look.

The 1905 isn't superior to the Samsungs, it can just be had for a better price due to Dell's coupons and the such.

For instance, you can currently get the 1905FP for $409 before tax, free shipping. However, I know there will be much better deals sometime in the future..there always is.

Yeah, the current deal of the week from Dell is the 2005FPW for $449 at Dell Small Business after you slap on a 40% off coupon, so a super cheap 1905FP is only a matter of time.

Is it still possible to get 1905s with Samsung panels are all they all AUOs now?

DVI is a noticable improvement over analog for an LCD. The main problem for me is that DVI KVM switches are so hard to find and are way too expensive!

I got a 1905 about a month ago, it was AUO. Seems to be more common now. Very nice panel all the same. Got mine for $298 to my door, $13 of that being tax. I'm sure a similar price will come around soon, if not a better one.

What are the best ways to keep an eye out for decent dell deals? Just watch the HD forum, or are there other sites. I really don't want to miss the next big one if I am getting one.

BTW - are the AUO panels superior to the samsungs? All the reviews seem to show the samsung and they got great reviews. I really don't want to run the chance of getting a crappier panel. Thanks!
