I guess i need some explaining along the lines of EPS... and its advantages

Curious as to whether or not EPS will be something that is wise to have for the near future of desktop hardware. Or are there already advantages now for those using EPS and dual core processors?

EPS 12v power supplies provide more reliable current to the system. Think of it like SCSI or smart UPSs. Do you need those on the desktop? No, but some power users do make use of them, because of the added reliability and features.

Occasionally, technology does filter down from the server world to the desktop PC world, but I doubt that most people would be willing to spring for an EPS 12v power supply, seeing as how most enthusiasts avoid SCSI like the plague. Maybe if SCSI drives or EPS 12v power supplies glowed purple...

EPS12V PSU's are also generally SSI complient, support the 8-pin 12V connector.

EPS spreads the load among more wires so you have less likelihood of melted ATX connections (glad to show you some pix of melted 20-pin ATX connectors if you want).

I doubt you will ever need the EPS for a high end desktop system unless you plan on going xeon or opteron. Even then, only some of the boards require an EPS powersupply. I have the True Power 2 EPS supply because it came with my Titan550. It's a nice powersupply and it does have dual 6 pin connectors for video cards if you intend on using SLI system. I plan on purchasing a Tyan K8WE when they finally come down in price. It does require an EPS powersupply which did influence my decision on purchasing my case.

A lot of PSUs come with the 20+4 connector so if you don't need to use all 24 pins now, you have them if you need them later. But even a solid 24-pin connector can work in a 20-pin socket. All you need is some clearance off the end of tha ATX socket opposite from the 3.3V (orange) wires for the extra 4 pins to hang off. It doesn't make sense now to buy a PSU that doesn't have 24 pin plug. But I also recommend against using adapters on high current circuits. So if your mobo has a 20-pin socket and no clearance either get a PSU with the 20+4 connector or a 20-pin.
