I rotate between Chrome, Firefox, and IE9 for dev work to get a good variety of testing platforms, but I spend probably 95% of my time in Chrome (at home and at work). IMO Chrome is the best by a long shot. I've had performance issues with Firefox over the past couple builds (OSX and Windows) and with the current active dev community, Chrome doesn't leave me wanting for extensions or extendability. I also like the simplicity of the UI in Chrome.

No issues with FF here. I'll leave it open for days and not have memory leak issues either.

I still say most people with memory leak issues are blaming the wrong thing. They blame the browser and don't mention they have eleventy billion 3rd party addons installed

I still don't care for Chrome that much. It's OK, and I use it for an alternate browser if I need one, but that's about it.

Actually I always had the mem leak issue but I have not seen it since I switched to Linux. I don't know if it has to do with the fact this machine has 12GB of ram vs 3.5GB on my old XP box, or the fact that I'm running Linux. Or now that they're at like version 384832.5 maybe they fixed it.

I prefer Firefox in the background over Chrome when I am listening to a music mix on youtube while playing video games.

Chrome opens up a bunch of processes compared to Firefox even with one tab open.

Firefox on the other hand only has the Browser process and then a couple of processes related to flash and its plug in container.

Also if your Firefox installation is slow for some reason it might be a good idea to look at your addons for it as was probably mentioned previously.

You'll have to go "over yonder" to find Nik nowadays...but he's a professional abuser, so he will appreciate the shout-out.

If by "no longer good" you actually mean "still the best"

Then yes.

Firefox has had the 'takes half an hour to load after a reboot' glitch for like a decade. Fuck that shit.

Even if I factor in a serious case of hyperbole on your part, I still have no idea what behaviour in Firefox you're referring to.

After a cold boot or a resume, Firefox here takes maybe 1.5 seconds to load.

Why the angst about changing a web browser?

I was wondering this as well. Is this a "what does using this browser say about me as a person" situation?

Because there aren't many decent options if you don't want proprietary software. Many people, myself included have amassed some essential addons, and no other browser comes close with the breadth, or functionality of Firefox addons. That leaves Chromium with no customization, and mediocre addons, and Midori, with almost no addons, and almost no features. Everything else is niche use stuff, or has little resemblance to a modern browser.

Edit:
Forgot Seamonkey which is a decent browser, but if someone has issues with Firefox, they'll probably have issues with Seamonkey since they share a code base.

Still using it here. Memory use doesn't get too bad. The only problem is it gets a little slow after a while, but that's with like 40+ tabs open for weeks. The restart add-on I have works great to fix that quick though.

One big thing I don't like though is how the options menu is now in a tab. I don't know how that's better than a popup window.

Firefox suffers from the issue that if one tab crashes, the whole thing crashes. Chrome is nice that if you have a messy flash application that causes issues, you only lose that tab.

I use Chrome on my laptop, but Firefox on my desktop (where I have loads of ram and high IO speeds)

Yeah I'd like if FF would do like Chrome. FF also needs to trim lot of fat. Remember in the days of Mozilla suite, FF was actually known as "the lightweight alternative"? Yeah, so much for lightweight now.

Side note, IE10 is retarded. There's a bug where it will not install on laptops with hybrid graphics and Microsoft refuses to fix it.

IIRC, they are the only browser left using TLS 1.0

They are literally single-handedly holding back the security of ecommerce by forcing servers to support insecure cipher suites.

So from a security perspective, Firefox does indeed suck.

It is decent on the desktop. But for Android, it is 10x what Chrome is which is ironic since Chrome is a google product.

I used to not have memory issues but now I do. And then the Restart add-on I was using stopped working, so now I use a different one but it doesn't retain the placement of the windows like it used to (I don't think its the Restart add-on, I think Firefox itself stopped doing that as I've had it crash a couple of times and when doing the restore session it won't put things back like it was).

AdBlock works way better on FF than it does on Chrome, although Chrome has gotten better, it still isn't as good in my experience. I also really fucking hate how Chrome sometimes the middle mouse to open a link in a new tab doesn't work so you have to right click it and tell it to open it in a new tab.

Looking at the overhaul to the UI that's apparently coming, I'm mixed. On the one hand it took a while to get the new interface how I wanted it when they made the changes back with 4 or whenever that was, but I don't think I'll be impacted by the change too much as its already mostly how I have things setup. Except for tabs on top, I'm not a big fan of that.

Chrome is usable but I don't like it all that much, and it screws up for me sometimes too.

Chrome syncs everything between all my devices, pretty handy feature.

It also syncs everything with Google and the NSA. However I still find Chrome is so much faster and generally offers a superior experience that I stick with it. Really wish the Firefox team would tidy up the code to make it as fast and stable.

Chrome's only weakness is it doesn't have a traditional menu. If it had that, I would see no reason to use any other browser.
