I'm hearing more and more people overly concerned about Google storing their info. I personally don't care. I use Google for web browsing, cell phone, calendar, email and even texting now. Of course Google is the only search engine I use.

So am I in danger of Google taking over my life? Do they know too much about me? What's the worst they can do with all my info?

Currently I don't think so. A Google take over of the government would probably be better for all of us anyway

Lemme see:

One of the biggest corporations in America? Check

A virtual monopoly in many areas such as search and free email? Check

Responsible for collecting private data on unsecured networks on tens of thousands citizens, capturing pictures of their homes, their cars and everything else? Check

All kinds of other things Im too lazy to even mention? Check

Yup, Google is evil all right.

Wal-mart and Best Buy are owned by the dark lord, Google is not.

:hmm: Perhaps we've been looking at this all wrong. WWIII isn't going to be the US vs China or any such thing. It will be Google vs Wal-mart or some such

Virtual monopolies do not equal a real monopoly. Unsecured data being exposed instead of being ignored? Seems like a good deal to me.

First they came for virtual monopolies and I didnt speak up.

Then they came for unsecured data exposed over wireless networks and I didnt speak up.

When they come for you there will be no one left to speak up. :whiste:

Nah, just secure your communications with the world, it isn't that hard to do. First they came for virtual monopolies, then they came for people with the ability to create monopolies, then they come for you.

I think they receive more criticism than they deserve. And people ignore a lot of the good things Google has done to help protect their privacy. For example when the US government requested search records for the ACLU v. Ashcroft case. Yahoo, Microsoft, and other search engines were more than happy to voluntarily comply, Google was the *only* one that told the government to go pound sand. And they continued to fight further requests in court. Then in the Viacom v. YouTube case when the judge originally ordered Google to hand over account information that could allow Viacom to identify people who uploaded copyrighted material. Google fought this tooth and nail and eventually they were able to reach a compromise that allowed Google to anonymize the data before handing it over. Google has also been involved in lobbying to get the laws changed to better protect privacy online (for example, making it necessary for law enforcement to get a search warrant to access emails and stuff like that, currently they only need a subpoena). Google has a vested interest in cloud computing, and they know that if it's ever going to catch on, users have to be confident in the privacy and security of data they store online.

Of course they've also done a lot of stupid stuff. Schmidt's comment about if you're doing something wrong maybe you shouldn't be doing it was misconstrued, but still a really dumb thing to say. Also the data collected from open WiFi networks was probably an honest mistake, but still very embarrassing for them. But I think if you look at their history, they've done a lot more good than bad and obviously do care a lot about users privacy and public opinion.

It's too difficult to stay away from google at all...that's just what you gotta live with. Just stay away from nigerians and child porn and you'll be safe...

I'm glad they store my info. That way I'm served only things that are relevant to me.

Google is the only organization in the whole wide world that had enough balls to stand up to China, so I still support them
