One of my all-time-favs along with others like GTA VC, FC3 etc. Not only did I enjoy the single-player lots, I also spent an incredible amount of time playing Deathmatch. Thinking about it, I would probably say HL2 was *overall* THE best game ever or at least I spent the most time playing it.

IRONY...I just last week thought back about those good times and looked at the latest version of "cinematic mod" whether I should re-play it. (But I don't like the new Alyx model he choose there, stupid).

Remember how incredible fun HL2 is/was when you finally found the cart and you could drive...and HELL yes that boat ride. Or going to Ravenwood. It's such a long time ago but HL2 is ONE of those games where things are burnt into my memory, while MOST new games I forget just after one week.

I am SO tempted now to re-install it again, good games don't get old!

Half Life 2 is one of the greatest gaming achievements ever made. Episode 1 was ok, episode 2 was great.

I put it up there with Warcraft 2, Baldurs Gate 2, Civ 2. Unlike the others, I still play half life 2, not much rivals it.

Sorry for those who don't get it. But go play it again.

It kinda belongs on GOG at this point. Half Life 2 is like a classic car. Fun to drive, cool looking, ground-breaking in it's time, but doesn't measure up to modern competition.

HL1 established that a FPS could have a plot and still have fantastic game play. HL2 basically established that all other FPS's and most other games where stupid and that you can have a real story, real characters, and a truly cinematic experience from a game.

It might not be your kind of story, it might not be your kind of game play. But if you look back at game play of almost any genre before 2005 and after lets say 2007 (games that started or were early into development after HL2's release). HL2 is directly responsible for the dramatic increase in game quality and basically set expectations so high that garbage that used to come out can't see the light of day now. I mean most games 40-60 now were better than most 80+ games back then.

Now if HL2 alone was released today. It would be considered a little short and graphically distracting, while being a little too on rails even if it pushes the "movie feel" of it. I guess it would be 80-85 rated game. Which is still really good. No game is going to hold up for 10+ years later, but this one better than most.

+1

I can't play HL1 any more mostly because the plot literally is "experiment went wrong, aliens everywhere", following by alien splatting. I think you have to play the game for something like five hours before you get any more plot advancement, and even then it's pretty slim pickings.

HL2 and the EPs on the other hand I think I'll repeat play for a long time to come.

No.

HL1 was amazing. The atmosphere, always seeing things from eye perspective, no cutscene. Great immersion.

HL2 started off good and just got better. Water Hazard is perhaps the best level I have ever played in any game. And as if that wasn't enough; just after that level you get the gravity gun, which opened up a whole new level of gameplay.

Half Life was great, with awesome AI.

Between Half Life and Half Life 2 I played games like No one Lives forever, Deus Ex, Clive Barker's Undying, Red Faction, Halo and Call of Duty.

Half Life 2 was much less impact full for me than Half Life.

No, for its day it was a technical marvel, the problem is that many of the innovations such as destructible objects, and physics are things that are taken for granted now. People are quick to forget that this level and quality of integrated physics and destruction in games was unheard of before HL2.

I remember Hl2 having a big impact with its Havok physics and gravity gun, the facial animations were also impressive, graphics were quite good with good art, nice texture and use of shaders, maps were also well designed,

other FPS from 2004 are superior in some aspects, like Chronicles of Riddick, Far Cry and Doom 3, but for me Hl2 is the best FPS from that era, because of gameplay and also the story/characters was more interesting.

I don't think it's overrated, it's easily the best FPS from that era, I had a hard time keeping the motivation to finish Doom 3 once with how repetitive it was, but Hl2 I've played multiple times and still enjoy the game, even playing around with boxes and looking at the scenery was fun.

I thought HL2 was pretty average to be honest.

The start is good and gives you a good feeling of a dystopian world but the moment you're given a gun it just goes downhill.

It's one of the best looking least demanding game from that era. I have even played part1 & 2. And the overall gameplay revolves around a story that's interesting to be part of.

According to me Doom3 was most overrated till date. With a dark background theme. It was so repetitive that I never got the time to complete that while I played other FPS. And ultimately uninstalled it.

HL2 have a charm of its own. I remember solving small puzzles with the help of gravity gun. Then stopping the gnats from entering the room with the help of strategically placed guns, walking under those giant 3legged monsters and throwing the mine at them in the hope it will stick at the right place before they reach the nuclear plant, riding the car at top speeds between the trains and through them to save our ass, taking down the helicopters from the sky by throwing grenades at them through gravity gun etc-2. It's one of the best I have played till date from that era hands down.

HL2 is the first game that made me go "Holy Shit! This is a GAME?!!" Started my addiction to gaming.

you have to think that by the time HL1 was released, other FPS's stories were non existant.
Quake 1 story was included as a txt file, you wouldnt have a clue about it if u didnt read that.
Other games had a big load screen between levels with the story developing in a text
Devs didnt care about story in a fps at that time so, even though hl1 story was not great, it was perfectly shown as dialogues and gameplay. It was the 1st (or at least one of the 1st) games in which:

1) you didnt have ANY cgi cutscenes telling the important stuff, it was all gameplay
2) short loading screens that didnt move you abruptly from one place to another, it was all 1 big gameplay experience
3) Squad IA... enemies that moved as a team. The little sonic dogs and the militaries (specially the military) had a very advanced IA for its time. Taking cover, throwing grenades.
4) HEADCRABS

hl2, on the other hand was a revolution in physics. It was (i think) the 1st game that had that kind of physics. Puzzles, dragrolls, the gravity gun to pick up stuff to throw around, everything physics related.

Half Life 2 is amazing. I still remember coming home from 2nd shift, putting on my huge Sennheiser headphones in a pitch black room, and playing that game until 3-4AM in the morning. One of my greatest memories of PC gaming was playing that game.

Judging it as a game (rather than specifically FPS), and comparing it to say Tomb Raider 1 and 2 (both released before it), it falls up short on the plot front. TR1 and 2 are pretty light on plot as well, but at least the gameplay is broken up a bit with plot.

Btw, I'm not saying HL1 was crap, it wasn't IMO. However, in my view, it hasn't aged well, mainly because of the lack of plot.

Quake 1 has less plot, but it makes up for it in gameplay. Having said that, I'm playing it a lot less than I used to, so Q1 is probably pretty comparable.

When the marines appeared in HL and moved as team, taking cover, tossing grenades, etc. it was another thing completely at that time.
