is i5 750 (Jun/2009) worth upgrading to i5 4670k?

I have a 7950 video card, i5 750 from 2009, (obv my cpu is the bottleneck now I think), 12gigs of ram.

I want to play Guildwars2 and Battlefield 4 flawlessly (60fps or so). I just want to see if this is a big upgrade going from 750 to 4670k. Will i notice a sig improvment?

I know Ill be chucking out 400 total at least for the cpu and board.

My current board also doesnt have sata 6 speeds so thatll be good upgraded for my SSDs.

Is it overclocked?
Doh! It'd probly get you 10-12 more fps.
Lynnfield is till pretty relevant.

yeah i managed to overclock it to 3.2ghz or 3.4..dont remember..but I am not too knowledgeable in regards to differences in archictecture. I can only assume the 4670k is 3-4 generations newer so its SUPERFAST. if its only 10-12more fps...im gonna hold out..and use that money for ps4 instead.

I ran a 860 at stock, then upgraded to a 3570K, now replaced by a 4670. Huge difference between the 860 and 3570K.

Hm, the performance per clock has probably increased by 20-40% depending on application on Haswell compared to Lynnfield. GW2 is highly single/dual threaded I believe, so you may see a performance increase especially in WvW situations and just in general, but if its playable I wouldn't upgrade. Its impossible to run GW2 WvW at 60FPS Max settings with any CPU, its too poorly optimised. You'd understand if you read the GW2 forums that people with 2500k at 4.5GHz can't get over 40FPS in WvWvW. Also $400 is alot and you already have a decent quad which should be fine with BF4 and upcoming games. As said already, maybe OC it a bit if you're not happy with the 750's performance?

However if you OC the 4670K to 4.2GHz~ it would be quite a bit faster than your 750. I heard 4.2-4.5GHz isn't uncommon for K series OC. If you can live with it, the 750 is definitely still quite fast. If you want the best performance then 4670K especially when OC'd is your friend. You probably won't see much performance increase with Sata 6 unless you read and write massive files over 4GB frequently.

The 4670K is about 30 percent faster clock-for-clock, and over 60 percent faster at stock speeds. But this is all theoretical - it doesn't mean you'll get much more performance in games:

www.techbuyersguru.com/i5CPUshootout.php

You should probably wait until BF4 is released to make your decision - it's very likely that your HD7950 will not hold 60fps, at least not at 1080p/Ultra, so to hit your targets you would need a much bigger upgrade budget.

I would say yes. When I upgraded my GPU I had an i5-750 that was slightly overclocked. Noticed the GPU was being held back by my CPU.

I say look at the i7-4770k however. You'll get a much nicer performance boost and if I recall seeing BF4 benchmarks it was more multi-threaded and took advantage of some extra cores. Plus it should last you a bit longer. This is all assuming it's within the price range since it's slightly more than a 4670k.

GW2 is ridiculously CPU heavy.

On my laptop with a 3630qm and a gtx 660m I am CPU limited in lion's arch at 20-25 fps.

thanks for everyones response...since the main games I play now are only gw2...(bf4-maybe), and starcraft 2 4v4....I feel like its not worth the upgrade..considering how everyone says gw2 wont fare much better with the upgrade..ps4 and killzone it is!!!...maybe when broadwell comes around...ill jump on it. I am in no rush! thanks!!!

?

Both games will see massive probably 50% fps gains.

Are you kidding? Maybe you talked to the wrong person but Haswell will be a tremendous upgrade especially FOR those games which are both CPU limited at high detail settings. I upgraded several 870 systems to IVB and Haswell and the difference is tremendous. Ignoring overclocking, the IPC difference is something like 40%. Huge.

It's your money and it's your choice. But I don't know who told you there's no difference in performance, that is clearly not the case - Haswell is much faster especially for those games you cite. Both of those games benefit greatly from more CPU grunt. Hell, I remember slowdowns in Mass effect 2 with an old i7-870 system. It's an old chip and doesn't have the same CPU grunt as a Haswell.

Add a 2nd 7950 and overclock your CPU. I'm planning on getting a 2nd GTX670 running with my i5-750@3.8Ghz.

You took the completely opposite conclusion here.

Those are literally 2 of the MOST CPU HEAVY games there are. You will see noticeable improvements by upgrading CPU, especially when thing start to get hairy (i.e. when you need the performance most). BF4 will also benefit from a faster CPU, especially if you go 4770k and overclock. A 4770k @ 4.2 vs your 750 @ 3.2/3.4 is going to be an enormous step up

I never mentioned crysis.

I have no idea what you are talking about.

Haswell is not going to net 50% more fps.Is it better? sure..
but it's not THAT much better.

10-15 more fps? yes.Maybe 5 more minimum frames.

Lynnfield is still a modern quad with L3 cache.

Smoother @ gaming than a 965BE @ 4 GHz.

I vote for overclock the CPU more.

I am in the same boat. I have a i5-750 overclocked to 3.2 Ghz base clock (160 bclk with turbo still enabled). I am waiting for a game to "make me upgrade" but there hasn't been anything been any titles in the past 18 months that have compelled me to pull the trigger. Perhaps the first round of PS4 and XBone ports will cause me to look at Haswell or Broadwell. Until then, boy has this i5-750 been a good investment, $200 got four years of gaming performance.

I would wait for BF4 to be released first, wait for December Mantle upgrade and then decide.

Yes it will.

i5-760 - 44.9 fps (this is faster than what the OP has but isn't overclocked).
i5-2500k - 64.9 fps

This is a 44% increase, not including ivy bridge or haswell.

Its hard to find benchmarks for Gw2 but

24% gain from 760 to 2500k. Estimating more than 50% gain from 750k to 4670k. (this is from the game release and may be different now- I play Gw2 and if anything its more CPU heavy than before).

If you want high minimum frames especially and don't want to worry about bottlenecks you should be running a Sandy Bridge quad or higher. Increasingly next year anything before that will be running slower and slower especially in next gen games.

4th gen core-i5... do it, i mean, it's 3 generations on top of the 750^

imagine the head ache, of slow frames. eat out one time less each week, for a whole month, save a couple dollars and get the 4th gen.

p.s. your display, ... that matters too. if you're still running on a 20" monitor, forget the upgrade, resolution-wise to fps.

You have to compare at the resolution and graphics setting you're going to game, running a benchmark 1024*768 with medium setting is not going to reflect what the difference will be at 1920x1080 Max detail 4xMSAA.

This is closer to what he will actually see:

and adding a 2nd videocard:

So adding a 2nd videocard will increase fps by 80-90 percent, but getting a new CPU will increase fps by 10-20 percent.

He has OCed the 750 at 3.2GHz which will put it close to 10% of the 2500K. Also, newer patches have changed how the game perform with different CPUs, so i wouldn't take that graph at face value as of now.

For example, FX8350 perform close to Core i5 3570K levels now.
http://www.intel-tube.com/amd-fx-8350-vs-intel-i5-3570k-guild-wars-2-fps-revisited/

The i5 is clearly better in the case shown. The 8350 dropped to 28 fps min and spent a lot of time in the mid 30s, hitting 40-50 average. The 3570k infrequently dipped into the 30s (min was ~33) and spent its minimums in the 40s for the most part, hitting on average 50-60 fps. The i5 is about 10 fps faster.

The 2500k is running at 3.8 ghz. Unless you are suggesting that there is 0 IPC increase between the 750 and sandy he is going to be more than 10% off. Plus he can overclock haswell about 10%.

Don't forget that the 760 and the 750 have boost and can run into the 3 ghz range. The OP's overclock is adding little to performance.
