Not hotness, its the new taboo.
Americans love pushing the limits. It gives them a thrill. Thats why so many females and young people have tattoos nowadays. Its why regular middle class college kids started serious drug use in the 60's (before that it was just lower class uneducated folks for the most part.)
Its also why the average smoker started their habit long before 18 and the average drinker starterd well before 21.
Taboo is why 13 year old girls have anal & lesbian sex and pierce their tongues. Its why teens risk their lives. We are so bored as a society we need to something, ANYTHING to shock ourselves and have some excitement in life.
Also cuz of the internet we learn about things much earlier in life, so it takes more to WOW us and much faster in life.
