is it just me or does football require the least skill of all the major sports?

and baseball requires much more skill than most give it credit for. i'd say it's probably the hardest of all major sports.

Swing stick at ball someone threw. Get lucky, hit ball with stick. Guy with big glove jog to ball, get lucky and ball drop in glove. Play game again.

I read your thread title. Baseball, simply put, is one of the least athletic and least intelligent sports out there.

Actually, I take that back - for those that consider NASCAR a sport... baseball requires a tad bit more of both athleticism and intelligence than that.

Football, in most all of the positions on the field require far more "skill" than pretty much any position in baseball. I'm not going to bother with examples, because you've made it abundantly obvious that you really don't care.

lol at grossly underrating the skill of baseball players.

Click on my link above, ESPN disagrees with you and so do I. Baseball easily makes the top 10 in difficulty (9th), and to compare it to NASCAR or golf means you didn't use an iota of a thought when assessing difficulty. Or maybe you've just never played and don't know how the game is played. /shrug

i was an offensive lineman (tackle) in High School...I can say even being a lineman takes skill. The biggest and strongest guys I faced were the easiest to block...

Doesn't that help my argument?

Is it easier for a baseball player to learn to play football, or easier for a football player to learn to play baseball?

No. Baseball and football are completely different beasts. First, football teams aren't allowed to draft players out of high school. Second, why would they? Playing football requires size and muscle mass. A lot of that mass is developed in the 18-22 window. Third, baseball has minor leagues, which means that teams can draft a player who isn't ready to play and shove him in any one of a number of leagues for a few years while they help him develop. In football you have 53 roster spots + 6 guys on the "practice squad." There's no room to carry dead weight.

As for your latter question, it's largely irrelevant and nearly impossible to determine. Baseball players, for the most part, do not have the size, speed, or mass to play football. No matter how good they might be able to get at catching passes, they've missed out on years of specialized development and CNS training. The same goes for football players. Most won't have the ridiculous muscle-memory required to go out and play baseball competitively.

There are always exceptions (Bo Jackson), but unless these guys grew up playing both sports to a high level, like Jeff Smazdja (sp?), making the transition from the highest level of one sport to the highest level of another is really, really difficult, if not impossible.

Hey, if I got to stand around on a field picking my ass for a couple hours a day and collect a fat paycheck at the end of the day, I'd say my profession required skill too. Doesn't mean it actually does. 99% of baseball is luck. The other 1% might be "skill".

Take out the stupid category "Nerve" and ice hockey is ahead.

I don't think Nerve is a stupid category. Translate that to BALLS. Rodeo Steer Wrestling or riding takes a lot more balls than golf. Boxing takes more balls than hockey, period. Your liklihood of dying is way less in hockey than boxing, hence more of a fear factor. Standing toe to toe with an MMA champion, Mike Tyson in his prime, or a snarling bull with sharp horns invokes more fear than most anything else in sports.

I would like the OP to share how he feels about fat offensive linemen making millions of dollars to hit other fat defensive linemen making millions of dollars who want to hurt a skinny quarterback.

Again, different skill sets for different sports. There's much more to football than pure athletic ability. I'd say baseball is a much less mentally taxing than football though because it's the least team oriented. As a fielder you don't really have to worry abuot what the guy beside you or across from you is going to do (pitchers excepted). With football, you have to understand what your teammate is going to do and when he's going to do it (ie. do I have contain on this play? do I have help over the top?).

I have a hard time believing you're quite this dense and am leaning towards this being a troll post.

why are you bringing up any mental aspects of anything? this is purely about physical skill.

Are you an idiot? Physical skill is tied to mental skill. Otherwise you could just bring in gorillas to play all our sports.

ok, then everything can be considered mental then, since every action requires our brain to control it.

you're bringing up the intelligence part of the game.
i'm speaking merely of the physical aspect.

well then if you put it that way, if you remove the intelligence from the game, baseball is a zero skill game.

Given significant strength, any man can throw a ball 90+ mph, and any man can swing a bat and hit that ball.
the intelligence factor is what allows a pitcher to throw different pitches to confuse the batter, and the intelligence factor is what gives the batter the reaction time to know to either swing/not to swing, and where to swing and how hard.

Either way, football requires more skill, intelligence, and physique than baseball for any part of the game.

Ok fine, when players are ON the field it takes quite a bit of skill. So your point is that people are sitting down doing nothing half the time in baseball...

Football blows... Stupid football season coming back... everyone in the office will talk about nothing but big sweaty guys grabbing each other, bunch of homos. Not to mention the bullshit "Wear your team jersey" days. What about something for those of us that hate football... how about a "Wear your favorite video game shirt" or something? Stupid bullshit sport. And the only people that require skill are the QB and the coaches. The fat tubs of lard that just plant their fat selves in the middle of the field like a sumo wrestler playing king of the hill only need the skill most detested by Blahblah - uber leet eating skills.

it's not like baseball where you need eye hand coordination to hit or field/throw the ball.
or basketball where you need to dribble and shoot (except for shaq who relies on buldozing his way to the rim).
or hockey, where just getting on the ice without falling on your ass requires skill.
etc.

yeah, you're an idiot.

you didn't even consider golf?

oh wait...that's not a sport
