I have the same problem with oriental people...

It's nice to see there are still people like you who refer to asians as orientals. We're making great progress.

Orient referrs to a location.

Oriental rug is not offensive.

People have a hard time understanding why oriental is racist and will continue to use it in non-offensive manners, like SagaLore did above.

Use=offensive, not the term.

Can we get over the politically correct BS already?!?
I'm from Central America. People can call me Hispanic, Central America, Latino, etc. What's the big deal? My wife is Vietnamese and I call her oriental. Does she care? no. Does that make me racist? Someone please explain to me what is so bad about this word....

A small number of asians decided they wanted to get in on the "offended minority" game and picked this word as one they would suddenly take offense to. As you stated in your first sentence it is nothing more than PC nonsense.

"Asians" means ALL people from asia, this includes India, philipines, siberia, china, japan, korea, etc.

"oriental" refers to people from "the orient", that would be "southeast asian"
Oriental is just more specific then Asian.

Saying "asian" but only meaning "southeast asian" is technically incorrect, and not including people from western asia when saying "asian" doesn't seem really nice IMO.

So, as what other's have said, WTF is wrong with "Orientals" ???

Except when it comes to african americans. I can meet you, shake your hand, introduce myself..etc..etc..
But if I ever meet you again I won't remember your face or your name. It takes many times before I can recognize most african americans. Something doesn't register when I see a black guy or girls face.
It doesn't make any sense to me, and it cannot be normal.
Anyone else have this problem?

Fairly normal, among all races. One of my black coworkers used to comment, "All you white people look alike!"

Still in the 1960s?

I was born in 1980.

I didn't know what the sudden fuss was about so I had to look this up. Apparently oriental was coined as derogatory at some point, but only in the context of its usage. To me, oriental means people from around China and Japan. If I were to say asian, I would be including Pakistan and India and I do not have as much of a problem recognizing them.

This come from the American Heritage dictionary. If you notice, as an adjective it's fine, but as a noun, aka calling someone Oriental, can be considered offensive.

IMO an easy way to remember:
Asian people
Oriental rugs (things)

"ADJECTIVE:

1. often Oriental Of or relating to the countries of the Orient or their peoples or cultures; eastern.
2. Oriental Of or designating the biogeographic region that includes Asia south of the Himalaya Mountains and the islands of the Malay Archipelago.
3. Lustrous and valuable: oriental pearls.

4a. Of or relating to a genuine or superior gem: an oriental ruby.
b. Relating to or designating corundum that resembles another stone in color.

NOUN:

often Oriental Often Offensive An Asian.

Usage Note:
Asian is now strongly preferred in place of Oriental for persons native to Asia or descended from an Asian people. The usual objection to Oriental meaning "eastern"is that it identifies Asian countries and peoples in terms of their location relative to Europe. However, this objection is not generally made of other Eurocentric terms such as Near and Middle Eastern. The real problem with Oriental is more likely its connotations stemming from an earlier era when Europeans viewed the regions east of the Mediterranean as exotic lands full of romance and intrigue, the home of despotic empires and inscrutable customs. At the least these associations can give Oriental a dated feel, and as a noun in contemporary contexts (as in the first Oriental to be elected from the district) it is now widely taken to be offensive. However, Oriental should not be thought of as an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations. As with Asiatic, its use other than as an ethnonym, in phrases such as Oriental cuisine or Oriental medicine, is not usually considered objectionable."

Also, SecretAsianMan is much easier to say than SecretOrientalMan!

I tend to agree. It indeed sounds like someone decided to jump on the PC bandwagon and arbitrarily take offense at a label that inherently is not offensive.

There's nothing wrong or derogatory with Oriental. It's just not a preferred term this day in age.

People need to lighten up. I think one of my teachers brought up a good point when he said that it's stupid that we call black people African-Americans when they have no more closer ties to Africa than white people do to Europe. He said he refuses to call them African-Americans because he doesn't call white people European-Americans, and I think that makes sense to a degree.

People who want everything to be politically correct just like to cry about whatever they want.

I remember during psychology class a long time ago where the professor said something like how a normal person wouldn't be able to tell animals apart like squirrels, pigeons, etc... they all look the same to us but to these animals, they can all identify each other easily. And that was just an extreme example, she went onto talking about how people have difficulties telling other races apart.
