Is it just me?

<lock bait on>Is it just me or are the mods in here a little strict? Story: I stumbled on this thread the other day that had a link to an ebay item, an 80GB Western Digital Hard Drive. In the description of said item, the seller stated that he bought it for his wife but then found out that she was using her drive space to make adult movies and had been sending them out on the web. When I found this thread, it was locked. I'm guessing because the link had the WORD pornographic in it. No links to porno sites, no pics, just the word. I found that description to be quite humorous as did others who replied. Yet the thread was locked. I was under the impression that free speech was ok here. I realize that the mods have rules, but there was nothing offensive about his link. I'm chancing getting a "vacation" for this, but oh well. I'm just voicing an opinion. And last I checked the description of OT is to "boldy post off topic." <lock bait off>

Did you take into consideration that it might have been a repost? Thanks for whining!

This was discussed before about what the Mods lock and un-lock. I too have seen some locks for no obvious reasons. It would be appreciated if they could put a "locked because" message at the end of the thread, if for no other reason than to help me not make the same mistake.
Someone else will remind us that these forums are free, and the Mods are volunteers, so if you don't like it, etc.

Don't forget the New Year's resolution. BE NICE!

[sarcasm]There's a new double-secret law that actually reverses the right to free speech. All the really cool people have heard of it.[/sarcasm]

In case you missed it any of the earlier 100 times it's been pointed out, this is a privately held and run BBS. Your right to free speech doesn't apply here, or any other place on the 'net owned by someone other than yourself. The mods do what they feel they need to, period, end of story. If it was locked or edited, there was a reason for it.

Occasionally, it'd be nice to know exactly why something was removed (most of the locks/edits I've seen are either no-brainers or have an explanation in them), but the mods don't owe us an answer necessarily. Just follow the forum rules, and when in doubt, ask before posting something you think skirts the rules. Then all will be well.

there is another way of putting that:
freedom of speach is a US policy, this is the internet

the internet is nowhere yet it is everywhere.

AI agree with you brnbngls about the mods locking threads for transparent reasons..

but then again this is Sheriff Shimpi's board and the mods are his deputies..if you don't like it...bling bling<smoking gun> you will get locked, banned and smoked.

You are here by invitation only(private forum..first amendment means jack $%%% here) and you have to abide by the owners rules..whether they are written or not..

I don't wanna get into a big free speech debate. In fact, I meant to leave that line out. And I'm not trying to start trouble. I was just wondering how everyone else felt.

free speech aside, this board is very strict. i've popped on and off over the past 3-4 years and seen people (new and elite users) banned for anything from:

-spitting in people's eyes (usually the mods' eyes) to "forum assault/battery/murder".

i've even seen people banned for no reason (the same goes for locked threads).

as such, i try and tiptoe around while on forums.anandtech.com.

my advice: while on these forums, pretend you are in someone's house--and that someone is mildy psychotic and armed with a double-barrel shotgun loaded with buck.

do that, and you'll probably be fairly safe and unharmed by any of the mods (watchful, nice, strict, etc).

I think that since the forum is private then the freedom of speech rules don't necessarily apply here... and if you feel the Mods are a bit too harsh then you should post a complaint under Forum Issues.... The rules are pretty clear and fair in my opinion otherwise this place would turn into a flamefest/zoo/jungle/etc.. you getthe idea... I've seen it happen so many times in other places...

I personally think the mods are pretty funny here... or should i say they have a distinct sense of humor...

That's a really good idea, actually. Sometimes the lock reason is blatant (ie, links to animal porn). We should all know not to do that. But other times it would be great to know why, because the reason might not be so clear, and then everyone who peeked in before it sank into oblivion could avoid making the same mistake.

This is true. The above suggestion would be nice to have, but having a free forum to hang out in while avoiding work D) is a good thing.

i feel that mods should be assigned letter or numbers each month this is changed. so that when a mod takes some action against you or something you did you can then speak to this mod

That's a good idea Jen. I've had to email moderator@anandtech.com and I got a fairly quick response < 1 hour and my problem was fixed. The anonymous moderator was nice polite and helpful. I would have liked to thank him personally...but then again some people will not be that nice
