but it does work out well that people like living in cities, since millions can flock there instead of buying lots in rural areas

10 more years until I get my pension. I plan on buying my next (and last) house, that pension will cover the mortgage for a very acceptable homestead for the family. Everything I make after that is just gravy and beer money.

Dunno, just the way I was raised. My cousin was raised in big cities, she even lived in (near?) Times Square for awhile, crazy. Couldn't pay me enough money to live in crowded places like that. I get all antsy and freaked out when I'm in crowds though.

Gotta ask, is that due to your military service? My buddy did a tour in Iraq and he's the exact same way.

I think more than likely, and not my Afghan tour but my Iraq tour when we patrolled markets daily. They were really crowded and your already heightened fight-or-flight response just made it worse, even when you're back stateside.

I have always lived in smaller towns though, so I may be a bit on one side of the spectrum to begin with. Several of my buddies who have done similar things don't have issues, but they tend to be from bigger cities from the start.

yeah going outside of your apartment/house and immediately being surrounded by throngs of people would be terrible. where's the buffer?

With a third baby on the way, my wife is starting to hint that we need more room than our current 3bdrm. Just for sh!ts, I took a look at 4bdrm in our neighborhood. 950k looks to be the minimum based on a listing just a couple blocks down the street for a detached. Ugh.

Not in Detroit. Urban Area near Charleston SC.

I live in Charleston SC as well. I bought my first home here for $40,000, 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 1150 SQFT. That was 1999, though. I sold it in 06 for $84k.

I got hosed on a $165,000 I built near the end of the bubble. Sold it a couple years ago for what I paid. Lost 20-30k total.

Built a $250k in 2014, now worth $350 or more.

Charleston is blowing up because Silicon Harbor is real. Our area is flooded with software jobs. Big old companies, new start ups, VC guys making it rain. Boeing, Volvo, Mercedes; they bring so many jobs to the area and tons of money.

my relatives in denver kept posting stupid pics of patio furniture with 6" of snow on it, every couple of weeks, all winter

explain that climate denier
http://www.city-data.com/top2/c464.html

See Denver in that list? Nope

See us having to use salt on our roads? Nope

This Feb broke a 100 year old record with 22 inches of snow.. then in March we had 60-70 degree days almost the entire month, by march 16th we hit 80. The Mistake by the Lake struggled to get out of the 40's all of March.

Considering I just bought 2 weeks ago, I want to say no.
Prices have climbed the past few years, but nowhere near what they were a decade ago.
I bought at 12% less than what the original homeowners paid in 2005.

denver's snowfall this year was 57.8 inches, which was only 57.5 inches over the yearly normal per this site (http://www.thorntonweather.com/noaa/snow.php). though wiki shows 53.8 inches as the average but that could be a different time period.

and let's not forget 2012-13 with almost 80 inches of snow in denver

looks like you got a lot to learn about the city you live in

Yes, the winters here are HORRIBLE. Please don't move here and drive up real estate even more.

It's all good stay in the midwest. Please stay in the midwest.

They don't plow my street at all and I drive is a Corolla, snow is melted within a few days. When I was in Michigan the snow that fell in November was there till April.

edit: oh and who counts record breaking years as norms?

Not even close, precipitation or high temps. Yes it gets cold here at night.. as any high plains desert does, but it's not unusual to enjoy a 50's in December. When I was in OH and MI that was pretty much impossible.

tbh i would think about moving to the denver area if my family weren't all here. lots of good java jobs and the mountains are awesome.

but i would also have to bring myself to buy a 100$k house for 300$k

That makes no sense. A 100k house is 100k.

If I didn't have fam here I would move to San Diego. Still may happen in the next 3-5 years depending how the next few winters feel.
