Is it me, or are Subway franchisees getting screwed over?

Subway getting screwed? Well at the end of the day they are still selling a lunch meat sandwich for $5.

And I find myself having to get more aggressive in my requests for the amount of veggies I want, even when I sacrifice meat (1/2 the layers of cold cuts that normally come on an italian trio) hoping they'll cooperate. Some locations don't even have baby spinach any more. Used to not be like that. Also the sandwich ARTISTS are getting more... interesting it seems.

edit- "aggressive in my requests for the amount of veggies"... well reading that again maybe they are getting screwed, by customers like me. Can two rows of tomatoes & cucumbers possibly be more expensive than their cold cuts? At worst it has to be close.

Congrats, got me.

It was the wrong day to have skipped breakfast & lunch then read a promo thread disguised as a subway trashing thread. I realized I was confusing sandwich names of my usual- ham, pepperoni, & salami isn't even one of the $5 ones. Baby spinach is back, and they were generous with everything. Of course there is a TIP JAR lol $.50, it might have been more polite had I not tipped at all.

Anyway I should be good on subway for another year or so.

I do get the occasional urge to get a spicy Italian sub there. For me it's probably once every 2-3 years. Jimmy John's Italian is better but they skimp on the veggies. It also annoys me that Jimmy John's only has one type of cheese. YOU'RE A DAMN SANDWICH SHOP, GET SOME CHEESE VARIETY! Apparently provolone is the master cheese.

No, the veggies are cheap compared to the meat. I worked at a Subway in college, we were supposed to put the standard amount on (IIRC 3 tomato slices per 6") and then add more if the customer requested. Double meat was an extra $1 per 6".

My manager gave me all of our ingredient costs for a school project I did. Total cost of ingredients was ~$1 for a footlong with meat. That excludes waste, but waste is pretty minimal as long as you don't forget to turn the refrigeration back on after you clean the line. This was 10 years ago.

It would be interesting if there was actual insight from franshise owners into the OP's question. There was a thread many years ago about quizno franchisee rage and I'm curios how subway owners feel about corporate support and their franchise investment(s).

One year in Pueblo Colorado the Subway had a drive through window with one person taking the orders AND making the food so of course it took FOREVER. The next year the drive through was gone.

I count 13 subways in my small city. Compare that with 2 Mcdonalds, 1 Burger King, 1 KFC, 1 Taco Bell. And that's really all the national fast food chains that i know of. If Subways can sell so many franchises without restriction on how many you can have in a given area, don't the franchise operators make like no money?
This is funny, because a few years ago, I noticed the same thing in our town, except it was only two Subways and one of them failed for lack of business. I even mentioned it to my neighbor at the time, that I didn't think a town this small could even support two Subways. I even said "If I were the owner of that franchise, I would sue Subway." The two locations opened only six months apart.

I thought the franchise corporation was supposed to do some sort of marketing/feasibility study to determine whether any given area could support the number of locations, and to also protect the franchisee from over-saturation, before they approve the location.

The portion size should be half of a 6 inch (depending on what sammich you get), a footlong has tons of carbs and calories that you don't need unless you're about to do crossfit right after.

Huh? No. Subway's portions for regular sandwiches suck miserably.

There is nothing unhealthy about a 6 inch turkey sandwich with easy mayo, lettuce, veggies, etc, a bottled water, and some apple slices.

The problem with Subway is that fat people get the XXXL Footlong Double Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich and a bag of chips and a soda and feel good about themselves because they didn't go to Burger King.

I personally don't get the penchant for these fast-food places.

My local deli stacks their heroes with WAY more layers of cheese and meat than Subway. They also use quality cuts of Boar's Head meat/cheese and charge virtually the same price. The hamburgers at McDonald's taste bland compared to a nice juicy hamburger from a good diner, the price is virtually the same per pound.

I will admit pizza chains can mass produced pizza cheaper than your local pizzeria. However the pizzas at Papa John's are way too salty and ABSOLUTELY no comparison to the quality of a genuine NY pizzeria. Therefore, I would rather pay a premium for a properly constructed pizza.

What do you tip the driver, and how do you like your steak cooked?
