I'm not convinced. There's a lot of food ingredients that could be considered harmful in large quantities, and comparing an overturned truck of ingredient to the quantity in a baked roll is disingenuous. It's worth noting it's existence, but whenever you eat out, you're at the mercy of the industrial food complex. Azodicarbonamide is one of many ingredients that may be bad for you, and avoiding it only is a false sense of security.

That is why more and more when I eat out I eat at local places instead of chains. But when I can't I still want to avoid castoreum and Azodicarbonamide. Who really wants to eat beaver anal glad?

Subway is certainly a more stable brand than they are, though. And I remember a time when $5 actually got you a foot long and cookies and a drink. They had stamps, and every 6 inches you purchased got you a stamp. 12 stamps = 12" of subsequent sub. What this meant was if you bought 6 subs you got a 7th free. Then they went to the subway card and made the return way, way less.

They claimed it was for a couple of reasons (per managers)
1) Stamps were being mis-used by the employees to friends/customers. (True - I had seen it)
2) The cards became a way to track customers spending/eating habits
3) The cards allowed credit for extras purchased (drinks/chips/cookies)

I problem I had with stamps is that some stores would not honor them if less than half came from that store. That usually meant that I had 3-4 stamp cards active at any one time.

Ever since I learned they use Azodicarbonamide (also used to make yoga mats) in the bread I picked every time I stopped eating there:

http://foodbabe.com/2013/09/23/are-you-eating-this-ingredient-banned-all-over-the-world/

So you don't eat bread? Or do you make your own?

Azodicarbonamide is in almost every commercially sold bread. And unless a restaurant makes their own bread or contracts with a local bakery(most dont) theirs has it too. The fact of he matter is you aren't going to know if a resturant has bread that contains it unless you know they make their bread from scratch daily. The fact is most local places use food distributors like SYSCO for their products(including baked goods).

Subway has been putting less and less meat every year it seems. You basically need to get a ton of vegetables to make the sandwich worth it to all.

That's what every restaurant has been doing (either that or raising prices or both). Also, the Subway bread seems smaller in diameter now but that may be just me.

Depends on the area. We have 3 McDonald's within 2 miles here, with two of them being less than a mile away from each other (at the two major freeway exits at either side of a busy retail area).

If I had the money to be a franchisee, I'd open a fourth McDonalds at the new freeway exit on the other side. Those places are non-stop busy, and there is literally nothing at the new exit now. A gas station there, and a McDonalds would have the money rolling in.

1. Quiznos is better

Ha, i have a subway across the street from me, and a quiznos about 1 block down. The quiznos shut down last year and the subway owner just opened 2 more in the area so he can't be doing too badly.

Quiznos was awesome, but the one here was in a weird location so it did not get enough traffic and closed down. I think they were more expensive than Subway though, so they were more like a luxery sub. If you want something better than just Subway then you go to Quiznos.

Same thing happened with Arby's, their burgers (or do they qualify as a sandwich?) were awesome, but it was in an odd location that is hard to get into. Then it turned into a Taco Bell, which was nice because it was something different than all the burger joints but that did not last either. Now it's a place that sells oxygen tanks.

Subway is shit now. Their bread, the wheat especially, is some of the worst bread I've ever had. The meat has also gotten progressively worse over the years. They are the bottom of the sandwich chain barrel.

Hell, I'd even eat at Schlotszky's first. Around here we also have McAllister's, Panera, Atlanta Bread Company, Firehouse Subs, Jimmy John's and Quizno's to chose from for sandwiches.

McD's are usually in larger stand-alone buildings, have more equipment, and more staff. Where as Subways are usually in smaller rented strip mall units, have minimal appliances (bread oven, microwave, couple of fridges), and a minimal staff. Most locations only have only 3-4 people on per shift.
yes, hence major the cost difference...

I doubt that. Around here, Dunkin Donuts is very picky about letting people open new stores. I think they only allow 1-2 per major road through the city (90,000 pop NYC suburbia).

The average DD here makes $30,000/month, meaning 12 stores would bring in around 6.5 million a year.

I think Quiznos did a couple things wrong many years back that lead to them taking a huge dive.

1: To many GD sandwiches in a mind numbing array of form-factors. Regular, Torpedo, Mini Torpedo, Flat, ...

2: Coupons: Inevitably after I had soaked them for something like 4 completly free, and then 5 buy one get one deals paying normal price seemed insane so I stopped going.

in MA, particularly the eastern half, you can't sneeze without hitting a dunkin donuts. in metro areas the density is at least as high as starbucks on the west coast.

I know 2 subway owners and they claim on those $5 sub's, they claim they clear .40/each sub. They really make $$ on volume and or multiple locations. Another owner I know owns 4 subways and barely clears 100k which is pitiful considering the amount of overhead he has.

that sounds pretty terrible. i'd rather take 20 cents on a gallon of gas.

In Chicago, they (DD and Starbucks) are about the same density wise; which is way too many, if you ask me. I dislike both places. Pretty much anywhere within the city is walking distance from a DD and a Starbucks. The building my GF works in has both in it I think.

Eh quantity vs quality. Your first two choices I can't even feed two people for less than 17-20$ for lunch. Haven't been to ABC, and firehouse was a long time ago. I'm a frequent flier to JJ, but the significant other really didn't like them, the sandwhiches were way too plain. On top of that they are still a good deal more $$$, my average lunch there breaks the 10$ point. I had Quizno's many years ago and it tasted like someone dumped a full shaker of salt on it and then toasted it. Never went back.

Subway is Subway. It's ok when taken on it's own, but doesn't compare to a real sub shop, or even the better chains. It's like comparing Taco Bell to real Mexican, or good regional chains. Taco Bell is good, cheap, non authentic snack food, and how it compares to the real thing is irrelevant.

What I find more amazing is how Quizno's survives. Equivalent sandwiches are twice as expensive or worse there. And quite honestly not as loaded with toppings. At Subway, I can get extra everything at no extra cost, as long as I'm a regular and know the employees.

Does Subway cater? I know Quiznos does.

Quizno's has a small $5 combo, so meh they are doing alright... The business model is different than subway, though if I were them I would make the basic deli foot longs on white or wheat $5 to put the squeeze on Subway. All they have to do is get in the store and smell a specialty sandwich going through the toaster, and I bet a significant percentage would try them eventually.

I worked at Quiznos years ago, the quality is much better than subway, soup is available, and the ambiance is much better in the restaurant. If you want to treat yourself to one of the best sandwiches ever made go get a black angus sandwich on rosemary parmesan at Quizno's.

People don't tend to drive out of their way for Subway...there needs to be more locations for them to do well.

I was at a meeting once with a vendor and we had Panera catering. It was pretty damn good.. But then again, I haven't been to many of those events. I'm sure it was 5x better than what Subway could have done.
