Is it me or KDE is just simply better?

I've just migrated from windows to linux.(redhat7.1)
I must say.. KDE is more ..windows like than GNOME.
(not sure of their version though..so )
GNOME is highly configurable though..but for me, KDE is just.. easy to use..especially the way the main menus makes me easy to navigate. And.. program seems to load fater under KDE.. hmm.. or it could be just me..

I dunno, but I prefer Gnome. I used KDE for about a year (into v2.x) and just switched to Gnome about a month ago and prefer it. Of course I am an OS/2 user from WAYYYYYYY back, so I prefer my interface being infinately configurable...

I've been a big KDE user for a while now but the new gnome 1.4 is pretty nice and may take over my desktop For now, I'll use both.

Isn't variety cool?

I used KDE 1.x when it was used in Mandrake 6 and maybe 7.0, but now I just HATE KDE. It runs very slow, the media player is soo bad that I can't even run mp3s without it stuttering (xmms is fine), and it doesn't run programs sometimes. Plus its file association doesn't seem to work. If I set mp3's to xmms, xmms doesn't even want to run PERIOD.

Gnome loads up faster and doesn't piss me off as much

GNOME 1©4 90% New Bloat and 10% Old Bloat
Nautilus had a lot of promise but it just isn't working© Here's an example: I clicked the terminal icon and 2 _minutes_ later it loads© I was looking at gkrellm, it had been doing nothing in those 2 minutes; 1% CPU usage the whole time© WTF was that?

KDE 2©x is pretty good but still a little on the slow side© At least it tells you something is loading© The antialiased fonts are nice but I would have preferred a solution more integrated with XFree© They also seem to be trying to be a Windows when they should be a GNOME© I don't want KPaint, Kalc, or whatever© Go work on KOffice and not a bad XMMS replacement©

Personally, I use Blackbox© It's like Enlightenment but runs faster, you just don't get the pixmap themes©

I like blackbox actually, BUT, I use my mouse left handed and I can't for the life of me figure out how to switch the buttons in anything but KDE and Gnome.

That and damn the scroll wheel works in neither.

And you're right, Nautilus is god awful slow. Any decent file manager replacements you can recommend?

I like KDE, since it's configurable enough for me, and it also looks better (imho). BTW, a thing that bugs me about GNOME (and any other GTK program, for that matter), is that when you move your mouse to a menu selection for a submenu, then if you don't slide your mouse over directly into the submenu, but instead go slightly down and over (I hope you'll understand; I mean if your mouse moves even one pixel off the selection for the submenu), the submenu will instantly disappear (try it in GIMP sometime with the rightclick menu, you'll see what I mean).

I like KDE. The only reason that I use it is because it is "ever-so-more" stable than Gnome in the slightest ways

I have configured them both to my liking and I do not see any considerable differences

They're both very buggy. Plain vanilla install of Redhat 7.1 loads Nautilus and spits out all kinds of errors on my laptop under Gnome. KDE just takes FOREVER to load, and some programs crash with ugly KDE library problems.

I'll be using Blackbox until the bugs get ironed out. Don't get me wrong, I think they're great desktop managers for the price

I prefer KDE. Gnome is too ... slow. But that could be because I'm running only on a P3-700 at 1600x1200, but I doubt that. Eh.. KDE is more fun

Ok, I guess I gotta chime in with the custimary complaint:
KDE and GNOME both seem to have the attitude they need to emulate windows. Unfortunately they both do it to well, and slow my computer down more than windows does (quite a feat actually).

Have to agree with that. I was surprised it didn't bomb on me after the crazy app loading test for a couple of hours (yes yes, barely even a test but it died last time I did loaded up a lot of apps). Apart from that, I can simply compile a new version of KDE if I feel like it. It's just soooo easy

Why is everyone here complaining that KDE is slow? I'm running it on a Duron 600 box, and it zips right along. Memory perhaps? I have 384 megs. Kernel? Using 2.4.5, which seems to have a USB bug Video is an old GeForce SDR, 32 megs.

I'm guessing that this is, by far, behind the middle of the pack of y'all, but it seems right snappy to me. And stable, which is more than I can say about Gnome of any flava...

It's not like doggone slow to me, but it's still not as responsive on my P3 550 256MB with a GF2MX. I'll give it a little bit more time. Other than that, everything's fine and dandy.
