Is it more often that a motherboard is "faulty" because of the builder/user or the manufacturere's fault?

That anomolous error found between the keyboard and the chair is more often the culprit than faulty technology on new builds using new technology.

a lot of the problems on new mobos come form the bios not the hardware itself so it's a software problem, which is still a manufacturer's fault.

I agree to that one above me. I bought the A8V deluxe motherboard and 3400 processor and I'm still trying to get into Bios.

The perfect example. Someone can't figure out how to get into the bios and they blame the manufacturer. Have you read the manual? That's an Asus board and they typically use an award bios so I would bet you hit DELETE to enter the bios.

Power issues can also prevent you from entering the bios. If you install an inadequate psu for the build---who gets blamed? The builder (that between the keyboard and the chair) for using a crappy psu, or the manufacturer for not allowing crappy psu's to power the system?

When I read the many posts here (and elsewhere) where people say that this or that was DOA so I'm going to RMA it-- my guess would be that 90% of the time (if the poster is being truthful about their problem to begin with) it's an end-user issue, and an example of their lack of understanding which will drive up the prices of parts up for for others.

For example, on another forum, someone I was trying to help couldn't get their onboard sound to work (their first build, and they didn't know to search for drivers or navigate hardware in Windows) so they just went out and bought a sound card, because they assumed that that part of the board was broken.

Actually, I take back what I said. Its usually the user. The reason I couldnt get into bios was the Ultra X connect 500 watt power supply was "bad". I thought the power supply was good and it was Hyper Threading issues. I switched to a different atx power supply and it booted up. LOL

My system wouldnt boot up SMC13. Still everyone had a problem with compatibility issues when the A8V deluxe and 3400 combo was sold from Tiger Direct. This was the manafactures fault.

I think the nervousness of the first build is more the culprit than faulty equipment. I have fallen for this more than once, the anticipation of turning up a new system and not having it boot right away always leads to false accusations and panic.

When this happens always step back take a deep breath and m/f everybody.

Then you get down to the process of elimination and determine which component or even motherboard bios setting is at fault.

Just one forinstance: the nvidia nforce 3 chipsets by default offer cpu smart fan control as a bios default that controls the rpm of the cpu fan.

I can't tell you how many times someone has posted to say that after boot his cpu fan has stopped and is in a panic, when if well versed on his motherboard choice would have known this is a controlled issue and when the cpu heats up the fan will cool accordingly.

just my 2C and experience

been there

... manufacturers should take some of the blame here.. especially when building a system based on new technology (eg. NF4 and SLI) that hasn't been exploited much.. After all .. there is a reason why there are beta bios' flying out the door every week from ASUS...
... having said that though.. I do feel the users are typically more at fault ... with the more common categories of user caused problem being as follows:
1) basic build errors during assembly/install: (e.g. jumpers incorrectly positioned, incorrectly mounted HSF's, etc. ).
2) not reading the manual and researching the build for their board.. e.g. why are there 24 pins on the board but my psu only has 20 on the connector ?, how do I reset CMOS, etc. ?
3) folks not doing their homework on ALL of the parts to purchase. People often try to skimp on the psu.. and try to get away using memory that hasn't been blessed for their particular board.. (not to mention getting value memory, and then trying to overclock with it)
4) Overclocking .... it's amazing how many people have issues of blinking screens, system boot problems, etc.. but it never occurs to the to first try removing any overclock settings settings to see if thats triggering their problem... Not to mention most folks are impatient, and want to immediately start overclocking a new build prior to a burn in period...

that 939 3400+ isnt an official AMD CPU... Look at AMD web site, it is not listed. Maybe a rebadged defective chip by some OEM...

These are "official" amd chips, but made for OEM's. The have 800MHz HT instead of 1000MHz, which caused a number of initial problems as most of the boards bios had to be updated to support this oddball processor.

Over 50% (yes, more than half) of the video cards returned to ATI for the stated reason of being defective are found to be perfect working order.

I have no doubt that all component and hardware vendors whose products are marketed directly to the end user/consumer have similar 'non-defective' RMA experiences, give or take 10%.

I've built about 200 systems over the years. Never got a bad motherboard or CPU. That's right 200-0 so this stuff is pretty reliable!

I have had a few bad sticks of RAM and a few video cards. Lots of bad floppy drives and power supplies. A few bad hard disks. Optical drives are reliable but some cheapies don't perform well.

I have made a lot of mistakes of course and blamed it on hardware. Fortunately figured it out before RMAs - only a few and they were necessary.

On this note, I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of people that have been having issues with beefy 20-pin PSUs blowing up on 24-pin boards have not been reading the manual so the can correctly line up the first 20 pins.

Probably if most users/builders carefully read their mobos/parts manual before they start installing the hardware, and then do it gently and carefully, there may not be that many problems.
