Generally speaking, regardless of platform, an app that crashes is usually the apps fault.
Without know what apps, or what platform, or any other details... it's kind of hard to actually respond constructively.
Major iOS updates routinely break compatibility with old apps. I can't play Earthworm Jim or The Act anymore.

And it's the OS maker's responsibility to ensure that they NEVER break compatibility? Is Microsoft supposed to make sure that Windows 10 works with Lotus Notes 1?
Great thing about Windows is that it will probably work anyway (at least on the 32 bit version). Just the other day I installed some applications from the early 90s on a Win 7 32 bit OS and it worked well. With OSX you can barely get stuff to work from two years ago
