Is it OK to mount a harddrive vertically??

Im planning on adding 2 harddrives in a raid array in my PC but ran into a problem. I have 2 PATA drives with SATA adapaters and a SATA raid controller. The problem is I have an Antec sonata case and the cover will not fit back on since the SATA adaters from the drives stick out too far they way they are currently mounted flat. If I rig the drives vertically it would be perfect....

Is it OK the mount the drives vertically instead of flat. By vertically I mean the power and ATA interface pointing down. Will this some how reduce the life of the drives?

no it wont have any affect. alot of old dells used to mount them that way

someone here even had a mobo, hdd, etc taped to a wall on campus..

Almost every single new retail computer you can buy now has them in vertically.

it will be ok. ignore the urban legend that hd will have shorter lifespan vertically.

I knew that dorms were getting crowded these days at some schools, but that's just ... whoa.

(My first sem freshman year, was stuck with two other guys, in a room intended for two people. *That* was crowded. Nevermind one of them had a huge stereo system, etc.)

Speaking of which, to complement the wall-mounted computer, may I suggest this. I found several packages of these at my local WalMart on clearance for $2 ea. ("...please don't use your CD wallpaper to store AOL CD's - that's just bad karma.") - LOL at the description.

I have a vertically mounted HDD in a Dell system, that's the only way to add a second HDD, so I think it would be OK.

provided the drive is at 90 degrees to the horizontal it should be fine. problems arise if, say, it was monted 45degree angle, the uneven spin would put more pressure on the drive and wear it out quickly
