Is it possible to buy new laptops without OS?

I am wondering if I can get a trinity laptop with no os to install ubuntu on.Wondering if you can custom order one from hp or dell or if anyone knows of another vender that will sell their laptops without windows.
It doesn't have to be trinity but would prefer it.

dell has some laptops that they sell (search under small business), but in general I've found that I've just had to eat the cost of the windows license (or i reuse it for a VM inside of linux on the laptop).

The best deals on notebooks always include an OS, so it is always cheaper to buy a notebook with an OS even if you plan to wipe it.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think about using it as VM that actual might be useful.


that toshiba is nice for the price might check my local staple to see if they have it. only issue is i wont be buying anything until january or february. dont know if the deal will still be available.

I dont care much about resale since I never sell my machines. After about 4years of use they get handed down to family. Then once they are no good then I retrieve them to put in my little museum of machines Ive owned.

laptops I've used have special drivers - for unique keys and features. I suppose you can download those.

You can dual boot windows and Ubuntu. Yes, you will get few HP laptops without windows which will save you few bucks but I dont think that's the best thing to do given the arrival of Windows 8. And with the OEM, you will be getting the chance to upgrade to win 8 in $15.

You can get most of the sager/clevos without an OS

Thanks,I will see if I can find a clevo or sager with no os.if the price difference is good i might get one but I think it will be about $90 less.



edit:I checked clevo/sager and it seems its only about a $60 less with no os which isn't worth it.
