Is it possible to remove the actual bios chip, replace it, and still have a working board?

Yes, it is possible. If you have a bad chip or have messed up the bios, most manufacturers will replace the chip and some will do it gratis.

You should be able to pull the chip straight out, it is held in by friction on each pin. The difficult part is getting the new chip in without bending the pins. There is a tool made for this that is not very expensive and should be available at any good electronics store.

As far as your question. removal depends on hte type of BIOS chip you have. DIP packages are fairly simple to remove by gently prying it out of the socket from both ends, doing so evenly to prevent damage to the chip or socket. Re inserting can be a little more difficult but is still pretty easy. Hold the new by its ends with the pins facing away from you. Place it on its side on a hard surface (Tabletop) and with gentle pressure roll the chip u until it is at a 90 degree angle to the table top. Do this for both sides of the chip. This will bend the legs to fit the socket and make insertion easier.

If you have a PLCC packaged Bios (Small squarish Chip) then you need an extectar designed for this purpose. I do not recommend tryin to pry it out of a PLCC socket. Inserting a new chip is simple, make sure pin 1 is properly aligned in and press the new chip into the socket.
