Is it possible to rescan for SCSI devices without rebooting PC?

Sorry for earler empty posts, but for some reason message did not go in

Is it possible to rescan for SCSI devices without rebooting PC?
I have SCSI card with only scanner connected (external).

If scanner was OFF during boot, SCSI card cant see it later when I turn scanner on.
The only way I know is to reboot PC.

Any ideas?

Adaptec 2940AU card, Umax SCSI scanner, W2K OS.

did you try going through control panel and scanning for new hardware? I believe since it scans the pci bus it should activate the scsi card and have it search as well hope it works.

Not HT, but it should be possible. SCSI supports hot swappable devices. However, I do not know if Windows supports this. I'd be totally surprised if Linux/Unix did not support this.

It's really the driver's job, and most consumer level cards don't have drivers that do that in Windows. Linux can rescan any (atleast any I've used) SCSI card's bus easly and with commercial Unix you come back to the companies driver having to support it.

Thanks everyone, sorry for wrong forum, I moved discussion to General Hardware Forum

I tried Refresh in Device Manager and it does not work 100%: sometimes it finds scanner, sometimes not.

In any case scanner software can't see, if it was OFF on boot. I am trying to find why.

Can't see it? Try loading some generic TWAIN drivers for it.

btw - In NT and 2k you can start and stop the SCSI card device and/or services to reset them.

Adaptec SCSI Explorer does the trick; a component of EZ-SCSI software.

EZ-SCSI works only after scanner found using "refresh" in DM.
"refresh" in DM not always works.
Scanner software can't see scanner if was detected at "refresh", only during boot.
Can it be something related to SCSI termination?
Scanner has terminator at the second connector, card termination set to auto.

If that's true then when the scanner is on the card disables termination because it detects the scanner, but if the scanner is off it enables termination because there's nothing on that side of the card. I doubt you can enable/disable termination at runtime, so that's probably your problem. If the scanner was in the middle of the bus with another device terminating it would probably work.

Regardless of what the O/S does the termination will not change. Its an all or none issue as far as the termination goes.
