Is it safe to "transplant" hard drive between Macs?

I am downgrading from MBP to Mac Mini. When my Mini arrives I will be upgrading memory and will be replacing HDD with one from MBP. Will I be forced to reinstall OSX and restore from Time Machine (time consuming) or will Mini work with MBP's hard drive "out of the box" so to speak?

I hope my question made sense ()

I pulled my HDD out of my MacBookPro and put it in my wife's Macbook and everything just worked fine. It took a bit longer on first boot.. I'm assuming to change drivers around, etc.. So I'd imagine it should work fine as long as you're going Intel to Intel.

I have moved drives from intel to intel with no problems whatsoever. Just make sure that the OS on there is as new as the system it is moving to. So, for example, don't take a drive with 10.4 and put it into a unibody MacBook Pro.

Yes, they're both 2009 versions with identical CPU's, RAM, Graphics hardware, so I am hoping that I'll just drop in HDD and "hit the ground running" immediately. Thanks!
Cool.. good luck!

I'd do a backup just to be safe, although, as long as you still have the Macbook, you could always just put the drive back in.
Absolutely! I have automatic Time Machine backups done to Time Capsule every couple of days so the worst case scenario is a full re-install so I should be covered. Thanks again!

Then it shouldn't be a problem at all. I have moved drives from Core Duo MacBooks to Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro (unibody model) and vice versa, and they have worked just fine, as I said, just make sure that the OS on the drive is as new/newer than the hardware it is going to.

It's generally okay but I have had problems before when the two computers have different builds of the same OS version (say 10.5.8 for example).

The transfer went from the older MBP to a newer MBP and the audio didn't work because something in the audio drivers or kexts didn't translate properly between builds and it needed to be Archived and Installed. Otherwise, I've done it with a bunch of other Macs with no problems, including my current Mac Mini to MBP 13" unibody to 27" iMac to 17" Core i5 MBP hard drive transfers. Same harddrive in the past 4 Macs.

unless you really like taking the Mini apart, why not just use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to make a perfect copy over FireWire?

or is the MBP drive larger capacity/faster than the Mini drive?

That's exactly the reason; Mini came with 160GB 5400 drive which I will replace with MBP's 320GB 7200 drive.

I will definitely keep it in mind in case something doesn't work right after install. I do have two failsafes in place: I will make an image with Super Duper, or as the last resort will do a complete fresh reinstall and restore from Time Machine.

Thanks for all the tips, guys!

Oh, and a special note to accguy9009: go fvck yourself, troll.

You could always just make a copy using Disk Utility to back up to an external HD.

Well, I did it last night and it went very well. It booted up in Mini just like it did in MBP, everyting was intact and nothing had to be reinstalled. The only thing I had to do was pair up my BT keyboard and mouse again. Oh, and taking Min apart can be a major pain the rear, lol.

AnyMal, my post was in jest, in hindsight perhaps in questionable taste, but I really didn't think my post would leave you so devastated. Please accept my sincere apology. I have a dry sense of humor and I know some folks don't appreciate it.

He may have been referring to your posts in the Foxconn thread that were made at around the same time.

You had to open that can of worms, didn't you? I would have preferred to let sleeping dawgs lie on that. From what I read elsewhere tons of people agree with my basic premise on that subject. They just don't read this section of the forums. I get it now, nothing at all negative here or prepare for the worst, lol.

I will let the OP have the last word on that. He is all full grown I assume.

I started this thread seeking help and all you did was post a useless drivel.

I see you said it was working fine, and that's not surprising, but it still might be worth doing an Archive & Reinstall at some point. It'll keep your home dir and settings intact but do a clean install of the OS files. Clear out duplicate driver sets and whatnot. Probably not necessary, but it's a fairly seamless process and it might make the machine a little snappier.

Good point, thanks for bringing it up. The only other "change" I've noticed is that iTunes recognized that HDD was in a different Mac and I had to re-authorize all my purchases.
