My estimation for humanity dropped like a rock since 2016. To the point of questioning freedom of speech and Democracy itself. Our system clearly wasn't enough to prevent devolving into madness. We failed deeply somewhere along the way. I think it was a sort of American hubris that "Truth" would prevail if given room to breathe. But I do not, for one second, believe humans value truth. Some of us may be trained and conditioned to seek it out, but most people will actively attack it AND efforts to reveal / make use of it. Our society can no longer function scientifically. May as well be a theocracy like Iran, for all the good our freedom and schools do. In the task of convincing our people NOT to be cavemen, we have truly and utterly failed.

Their alt-reality teachings are spread by the feels, and through the internet like a contagion. Ebola, but for the mind.
Social media was our undoing.

Instead of absolute freedom for chaos and anarchy, our people needed both a guiding hand and the melting pot. We had to be formed into a single cohesive society. Disagreements via alt-facts, needed limitations. Thoughts and feelings of our purpose and our need for the scientific method needed to be carefully guarded. Lest people decide to empower themselves through lies, whipping up dogma and sending hordes of the ignorant to undermine our very foundations. Attacks on our institutions needed a firm hand to slap back and, if needed, to punch back. Most of all, inaction in the face of madness will be our final undoing.

Our society has already jumped off that proverbial cliff. These final years are just a matter of waiting to see what the splat looks like.

It worked well for Terry Jacks. Me too, I guess. We sold our house in boomtown Alberta in the late 1990's for 4 times what I paid for it because of the right wing nonsense and soft racism there, bought a chunk of bush on an island and because this is considered remote I've been getting 30 to 50% higher wages doing the same kind of work and much of our food is local fish and deer. When the weather is warmer, we can wander the yard naked and most of the neighbours are artists and musicians. When I do talk to the people where I worked in Alberta they are spouting the wonders of crypto, silver and q-anon shit amidst trying to convince me to move back, despite them agreeing that I would really hate it there now. And to top it off, Tucker fucking Carlson is making a tour of Alberta spreading U.S. batshit lunacy to sold out crowds. I figure every day here has been worth at least seven in that shitberg. Our property where we live has increased about four times ( would be more but we're not trying to make it too fancy), and some of our other properties we bought here have increased by twelve fold. But yes, ymmv.
