There are companies in India which you can outsource this task to. I know of an organization that puts out monthly magazines (trade magazines for the granite monument industry ~50-100 pages/issue) and they have issues back from 120 years ago. They sent all the originals, via DHL insured courier, to a company in India that scanned them, put them in a multitude of formats (.pdf, .jpg., .tif, etc.) indexed them, made them searcheable by words and images, and put the entire collection online for all members to search and pull copies. I think the project cost in the neighborhood of $10,000, which is nothing compared to how much it would have cost to have it done here.

And it was completed in about a month's time.

I hear that a lot of digitization work from govt. records to your tax returns archives are done in India nowadays.

Something to think about.

Nah......... I've done a lot of the work already......... just need some time to do the index.

I did finally let go of 7 banker boxes of magazines.......... the majority of my collection.

I gave them to another hobbyist.

Cheers,
Aquaman

Do you think it's crazy to scan 600+ mags? I won't be scanning every page but all pages with articles on them so for example a 70 page mag will have 45-50 pages that have articles or pictures on them.

I guess I will find out how tough my Canon Scanner is

To update:

633/637 (99.37%) Done

4 mags to go

52000+ scans

21gb of scans

314 lbs (144kg)weight

No Torrents

Aquaman

Dom't think I could afford that

My new problem is that some magazines are coming in a wider format (wider then 8.5 inches). To get a bigger scanner to handle that ......... starts at $1500+ :Q

Aquaman

scan then stitch... just takes more work.

send them to Aquaman, he'll scan them for you.

Stupid quote time, but I can't resist.

So how exactly does your brother-in-law breed and raise aquariums?

</blockquote>

Well, he said he started out with 3 but since he left them alone in the dark room, now he has aquariums everywhere. He's even started giving them away.

Ah, I get it ... thanks for clearing that up.

Make sure that you have a backup of all the scans that you have done. After you are done, I would burn those ~21-22GB on DVDs. You dont want your hard drive to die after all the hard work.

Did u use the same scanner for the last 3.5 years ? If different scanner, did the quality of scans went up with the newer/better scanner. If quality is improved, are the improved pics taking more space ?

I hope you organized them into PDFs as browsing through JPGs can be a PITA.

2 different HD & various DVD's are used to back up these scans. I am thinking of putting them on flash memory cards if they get real cheap.

Same Canon Canoscan 670U scanner........... it's work horse.

I will make them into PDF's with database index.

Wow. Nice job. You are almost at an end.

No, he only need 4 more back in Feb. Now he has 18 that have yet to be scanned. He's also either found some more mags or is still purchasing them as the total has increased.

What I want to know is whether the universe will implode once he's finally finished with this monumental task.

He's just a big tease! He will never finish...
