I've done it before, it was awesome, all my DVD's streamed around the house, loved it. I'll do it again, just need some more storage space, buying some off my mate as we speak.

I'd rather do it myself.

Wait until you get a significant amount of blu-rays that take 3-(9.x)x the space per movie. And I won't settle for lossy compression, so I'd basically be mounting ISOs (with pre-views and such removed of course). Just not worth the time unless you're really pressed for space IMO. In the meantime my shelves of several hundred movies and a few TV series is something people are impressed by.

Man that's awesome, I wish I had the time & ambition to scan in my magazines as they take up a lot of space. Aquarium, DIY and car magazines all over the place I tried doing that with the zillions of CDs I have, but I think I made it through half before I quite ripping them.

how much space can hdds take up?

it's not just the hard drives, it's the enclosure, power supply, floor space etc. i've got enough room in my server box now to expand up to 14tb with current 2tb drives so I should be good for a while.

when you live in a cramped new york apartment, space is at a premium

stack hdds... connect and power the one you need. end of story

I for one do not wish to have a stack of hdds all running.

I just built an unRAID server. It currently has three 2tb drives within. The software spins them down when idle for 15 minutes, or some other number. It pulls about 25 watts when they're spun down. Not a large amount. Plus, the server can be shut down when not in use. That's zero watts...

my drives travel out of the house so your solution doesn't quite work

you have to keep your scan on hdds, and if you page down fast enough, your mags are like movies.

see, on topic :awe:

I just started ripping/reripping my 1000+ disc DVD collection.

After 1 day I am starting to think that I am crazy.

Have 4 computers going at once, 31 down, 969 to go.

Started ripping them to Video_TS but my 4TB NAS filled up too quickly.

When I am done with the DVDs I get to move onto the 250+ Blu-Rays.

lulz... I would rather walk up to the rack and pick out the disc and play it.

I am getting 120fps encode on my dual quad core xeon 1u Dell servers.
Glad I didn't auction these bad boys off yet.
(I wonder what I would get on my new servers?)

Yo Aquaman! Share with us your enlightened scanning knowledge!

I picked up an Epson GT-S50 duplex document scanner recently, but I'm having some trouble getting the file sizes down. Scanning a color book makes like a 150 - 600 meg file. If I optimize it, it gets smaller but looks terrible. Scanned ebooks available online are like 15 megs for 500 pages with color photos and look great...how the heck do they do that?! I've been tinkering with settings and various scanning programs, but I can't seem to find the right mix of quality vs. file size for PDF output. What do you suggest?
