Cut the spines off of 'em and use a sheet-fed scanner. I got one of these about a year ago and it's already scanned a couple thousand pages.

Isn't it should be a lot easier now? Use your smartphone, take a bunch of picture then convert to PDF(or as jpeg).

I would think that you would have wanted to keep the ads as well as the articles. Some of the best selling collectibles are old ads.

Just imagine that there was a market for - say - old Apple product advertisements (first iPod, first iMac). Being able to image search through hundreds of old magazines might be very useful. You could know that the January 2002 issue had an ad for a certain product. No law against reselling the original magazine!

Of course, you would have had to keep all of the originals in the first place.

The latest edition of one of my journals arrived today and I was thinking about how to unload the last four years' worth of paper. Then this thread pops up again. Scanning would be an option but I already have online access to the complete archives. Maybe donate them to a homeless shelter. Maybe learning about the evolution of sedimentary basins through isotopic analysis of siderite might help someone get back on their feet.
