Is it still possible to get Apple's iPhoto app for OSX?

I just bought a rMBP. I know iPhoto have already been discontinued. Is there any chance of getting a copy of the software? I think Apple even released an update to make it compatible with El Capitan.

It's no longer on the Mac App Store, so your only real option would be to find a copy somewhere else (and I don't think that's legal).

To echo the earlier statement: why not use Photos? It does the majority of what iPhoto did, and more... and it's considerably faster. The interface isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I found any hesitation to come more from unfamiliarity than interface design.

If you have installed or updated iPhoto with the App Store on another Mac back when it was still available, it will still be available in the App Store under Purchased. I just tested this theory and was able to download and run it on El Capitan. For what it's worth, the same applies for Aperture.

When I updated to El Capitan, already installed iPhoto carried over.
When I bought a new iMac and tried to install iPhoto fresh, it would not open or run.
So you can carry iPhoto over, but my experience you cannot fresh install with El Capitan.
I also liked "iPhoto" much better than "Photos".
"Photos" as far as I can tell does not let me name imported photos.
"Photos" mixes up newly imported photos with the mess, where iPhoto created its own folders import after import.
Sure, iPhoto created folders all labeled "untitled", but at least you seen that bunch of imports collected together in an untitled folders one import after another.
"Photo" displays the very last import group, but if followed by still another import the previous import is then scattered in with the mess of other "Photo" photos.

I simply do not like the way "Photos" does it's organizing on its own after the import.

If I'm missing something here, do enlighten me.

I noticed the same thing. I also use my last year of photos as my screen saver. Couldnt figure out how to do that in Photos.

Did you install it from the App Store? I just tested it on a machine with a fresh install of El Capitan. I was able to download and install it from the Purchased screen in the App Store, and it ran just fine when I launched it.

Screenshot for proof.
Screenshot of second computer.

Thanks! That did work.
I had been installing from my iLife DVD. That i guess was a version not compatible.

Now... I need to get the PHOTOS library into the iPHOTO library.
iPhoto doesn't seem to like the library created with PHOTOS.
Will not import.

That's not surprising. Although Photos isn't explicitly iPhoto v.<next>, it sort of is. And just like how Word 2003 won't open a .docx file (natively), iPhoto can't handle a Photos library file.

In fact, it's more than that. It's like asking Word to open a .xlsx, not just the new file standard, it's for a different program altogether.

You might have to do things the hard way and move the image files directly.

Think I found a solution. Use BOTH.
Having so many photos and video carried over into PHOTOS when I started using that, I'll just stop using PHOTOS other than to look up the old stuff, and start using iPhoto for everything from here on.
Everything pre Jan 2016 in PHOTOS, everything after, iPhoto.
That way avoid one library from becoming so large, that moving and managing had become a lengthy process.
And I can always export iPhoto stuff over into PHOTOS if needed.
SOunds like a plan to me.
