Windows 98 Second Edition
Product Availability: June 30, 1999

Mainstream Support: June 30, 1999 - June 30, 2002

Extended Support: June 30, 2002 - January 16, 2004

Upgrade Information: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/default.asp

So after january 16, 2004 they will completely drop support. After that any open win98 running on the internet will be open game for hackers since MS will no longer offer security fixes. Against any new hacks that were developed after 1/16/2004 your firewall will be your only protection. Time to upgrade.

I beleive that you can download windows updates for 98 separetly in .exe file formats. Download and burn those to a cd.

Go to Windows Update in IE, click on Windows Update Catalog, choose your Windows version, download all the patches.

Download a copy of Knoppix, Damn Small, Gnoppix, Morphix, or Dynebolix Linux CD and use it for email/internet.

Live Linux CD is the best virus protection that you can have.

Yes, and it's a major pain. I can't find anywhere with all of them in one place, so I'm stuck searching Microsoft's download center for all downloads for windows 98. When I searched for security, I got about 10 good updates. I know there have been more then that, though.

Anyone know the right place to get windows 98 updates to burn to a CD?

Of course nothing new is going to be released..so any future security holes that might be found in win98, you're on your own. Good luck with that

I think the real picture would be of a bunch of 15 year old crackers getting ready to race to see who can sell the most hacked win98 boxes as relays to the e-mail spammers.

Unless they invest in firewalls, good virus scanners and such, however unlikely.

Even if you did do that, you still wouldn't be protected from crackers. This could end up being a huge issue...

According to the Product Life Cycle.

98 will not longer be entering its unsupported stage, January 16, 2004

With this footnoted:
# Microsoft will offer paid incident support on Windows 98/98 SE through January 16, 2004. Windows 98/98 SE downloads for existing security issues will continue to be obtainable through normal assisted support channels at no charge during this time. Customers can request Windows 98/98 SE fixes for new security issues and these requests will be reviewed. Fixes for any new security issues can be specifically requested through normal assisted support channels. Web-based self-help support will be available for at least one year after assisted support has concluded. Mainstream support for Windows 98/98 SE ended on June 30, 2002, and no-charge incident support and extended hotfix support ends on June 30, 2003.

End of Life is January 16, 2005, I assume this date is when all existing fixes for 98 will be removed from microsoft sites.
