Is it weird to be reading these books in public?

A biography of Adolf Hitler, the Koran, or the "Making of the Atomic Bomb." I asked a few people and they said that I shouldn't do it.

I'm not talking about reading these on the subway or near a synagogue or something. I'm talking about reading these types of books in the school (college) library. I'm interested in reading about this stuff.

I disagreed with the few people. I wouldn't judge someone reading those books. I'd think that they were doing something scholarly or something. I've got other books I can read though, if these will alienate people.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd pick something else for public casual reading.

EDIT: Actually read what books you listed instead of thinking of what I wouldn't read in public, and none of those I would have a problem with in public.

I mean the Koran, a holy book? Making of the Atomic Bomb? Hell even Hitler's biography isn't really that bad. Now if you're a Skinhead with Aryan pride tattooes and you're reading Hitler's biography.

"Anal stimulation using household items" is something I wouldn't parade around reading in public. I mean I wouldn't read it at home either, but I certainly wouldn't read it in public.

Especially in a library, pretty much everything is fair game.

They said you shouldn't read books? Wait, aren't you fifteen or something? If you're in high school I'd avoid it. You might think you're a cool little rebel when you do it, but if people at the school get concerned you'll be forced into counseling sessions and evaluations and a bunch of other tedious bullshit. Seriously, schools aren't taking many chances nowadays.

Well if you're doing it to really learn and understand the subjects in those book, why not?

If you're doing it because you are crying out for attention, then you shouldn't bother.

As you said though, you really are interested in those books, so go for it.

I'm in my first year of college. These people that told me this don't go to the school though. They are college educated, however.

I'm not doing it because to call out for attention.

Koran- My entire family is moslem, but didn't force it on me, so I haven't even read the book. I'd like to read it to learn.

Hitler- I've read biographies on a bunch of world leaders, and WW2 is a special interest of mine.

Atomic Bomb- Just got finished with biographies on Einstein and Oppenheimer and I'm even more curious about the Manhattan project.

By the way, nobody is going to think you're building an atomic bomb in your dorm room no matter how many books you read on the subject...

The Quran? Why would it be weird to read that in public, ESPECIALLY if your family is Muslim? It isn't any different than reading the Bible in public if you ask me.

I can't believe people would tell you not to read those books. At first I thought you were talking about reading them at the bus station or something, in that case sure it might draw a negative reaction but I wouldn't advise against it. The library is a whole different story, though.. anyone you gets upset about you reading about Hitler or the Koran or anything in a library is a moron.

Also nobody cares what you're reading.

Would think nothing of it unless you were wearing a Nazi uniform or had swastika tatts...

Who cares what they think?

Get THIS BOOK, then go sit next to someone on a park bench and read it. After a while, look over at them, grin, then start asking if they live in a nice neighborhood and if there are any houses for sale in the area.

Making of the Atomic Bomb - Richard Rhodes is an extremely good book. I'd recommend reading it anywhere. Read it in church, er, mosque. Read it on the bus, read it with green eggs.

It was a free country, once.

To the OP: Read the books. You're in college, and thus are supposed to learn stuff. Reading is an excellent means by which you can do this.

You can end up on certain watch lists and things for buying certain books.

These "politically correct" folks that tell you not to read them are the cause of the continued wussification of America. I say read them. If they don't like it they can go somewhere else.

Hell no. Read anything you want, anywhere you want. If people don't like it they can f the hell off. Nothing finer than reading the Anarchist's Cookbook at a city council meeting, or catching up with NRA rags in the teachers lounge. People who are offended need this kind of stuff to remind them how ignorant and insignificant they really are.

There is nothing more important or pure then aquiring knowledge. In an educational enviroment there is no reason what so ever for reading something else. Gotta say I'm pleased the thread wasnt "friends say I shouldn't read this books at all."

Only thing that may be worth a little thought is if other people would be offended or would judge you. Basically people have no good reason to do either. If they are offended it's their own fault [your not trying to preach to them or force it in their faces]. If they judge you then there opinion isn't worth caring about [refering to students/members of the public. Your Boss or tutors may be a different story].

*Goes out to buy "Making of the atomic bomb"*

The Hitler and Atomic Bomb books aren't that big a deal. The Koran could be a problem depending on where you go to school.
