I think you are confusing your decades. All those things existed in the 90s. Yes, CD players took over from cassettes, 8-track, and record players, but plenty of households had record players in the 90s (and even now vinyl is still appreciated by a lot of people). If you were a 90s kid you knew what they were even if you didn't have one (from DJs "scratching", at the very least). Smartphones didn't become prevalent until late 2000s.

Also, every generation does this lamenting that the kids today don't have the same experience. I don't care if you were born in the stone age or in the 60s or 2000s. It's mildly annoying, but let people enjoy their nostalgic condescension.

I feel like now if you give a woman a compliment on a specific article of clothing, you run the risk of being branded a perv in her eyes. Anyway, my coworker had a new outfit on today and had some new kicks to go with them and I told her "New shoes eh? They look nice" and immediately thought "I shouldn't have said that." It was just a genuine compliment, she looked well put together, but I feel like the days of complimenting women are coming to a close thanks to weirdos and fetish porn. Thoughts?

Here's my assessment. I think if you deliver the comment in a way that's commensurate with your relationship, it'll fly. Sincere admiration in your voice will help her buy it as authentic, and not a pickup line. And don't make her the object of your attention like you're sizing her up. Keep it flippant, friendly, and move on. Women are quick to pick up on weirdness in relationships, so follow expected protocols.

A "new shoes?" comment might signal you are monitoring her outfits for changes, and if you aren't friends, well, welcome to creepville.

I make it a policy to never compliment a woman on any aspect of her appearance. I do not ever socialize in any 1 on 1 situations with any women from my workplace. If a woman in my organization comes to my office for anything I make sure the office door stays open at all times. It's sad that I have to do these things but I have seen a couple instances of harassment allegations that were clearly false ruin a colleagues reputation and damage their careers.
