Is it worth buying final fantsay 7 ?

I noticed FF VII is on sale this weekend; but no clue how it plays after all these years. I've never played a FF game; but I do like wizardry 8 and M&M (though it is a bit dated now).

I'm playing some game on my tablet called Symphony of Eternity but no clue if that is similar to FF VII.

Otherwise, the battles are typical JRPG turn-based 1D map (2 ranks) and decent 2D monster / attack / spell animations.

People viewing it through nostalgia glasses love the story, but I haven't played enough of it to agree or disagree.

IMO i'd just look for a PS1 version and run it through an emulator with pumped up graphics, but that's me. It is one of those games that hasn't aged gracefully. Nostalgia is a funny thing.

I bought it a while back on Steam but haven't even loaded it, yet.

It will work on all versions, including Steam.

That said, it isn't the best FF by far. It is a departure from the older games that were my absolute favorite games back in the day.

well... if you have neevr played it and you enjoyed playing the earlier nintendo DS remakes, you would probably enjoy ff7. The PS1 level of graphics would be hard to stomach even today (texture smoothing and perspective correction were key to 3d graphics, this is why the n64 looked so much better even though I think it renders less polygons). Thankfully the pc version of ff7 has all that + a bump in resolution. This really made alot of the spell effects pop.

I think it is still limited to 800x600 though, the music is a bit of a mess on the pc version, and I think there was fps issues though so it probably isnt going to get much above 30fps.

Fantastic story and great characters, but this was one of the first ps1 -> pc ports and it shows. You might have a better time if you use a PS1 emulator and the PS1 disc.

You can get a mod to make the game look better. Also, from what I read, Squaresoft wanted to go "more realistic" with Final Fantasy VIII, which probably explains why VII has such a blocky, cartoony look.

Eh, I'm not a huge fan of it, but it's a fun game to play. It still keeps the fairly conservative battle system, which I prefer. Frankly, I think the story is a convoluted mess that reminds me of overrated anime like Akira.

I played it back when it came out and thought it was awesome.

I've replayed parts of it over the last few years though and found Cloud to be a whiny baby. However the story gets better if you can stomach through the first small chunk of the game.

That said, for $5.99 (I think that's what it is?), it's worth it. I think if you focus on the main story it takes like 20hrs or less? Although first time through without a guide I'm sure you'll be a little higher at least.

Agreed. My favorite was IV. My favorite "Final Fantasy" in recent years isn't actually a Final Fantasy game....Lost Odyssey for the 360. I realize that this is a PC thread but I think it's still on topic.

FFVII is absolutely worth it. Even if you don't like the story or characters (which I do), the gameplay is definitely worth it. Really, really fun game; played it for 10 hours straight once I really got into it.

Definitely use bootleg (graphics/music mod); the mods themselves are a huge file (20+ GB!), but it improves the game immensely.

PS: No nostalgia glasses here. The first FF game I ever played was FFVII Crisis Core for PSP (released in 2008).

Ignore everyone who actually says ff7 is a bad game. It is currently the #1 requested remake, most iconic characters of the series, and yes the story is awesome. Everyone saying it is a bad game and is the worst of the series are just people who hate things that became popular.

I think the timing of FF7 - being the first 3D Final Fantasy game on a new console at the time, the first PlayStation - made it a big success in America, but I honestly like FFVI (aka FF3) and FFVIII (my favorite Final Fantasy) more. I think Final Fantasy 7's storyline and system were easier to grasp, which made people dismiss Final Fantasy 8 as being inferior when it came out later on, unfortunately. Final Fantasy X was pretty good, too.

That said, FFVII is definitely still worth it if you like RPGs for story and don't mind dated graphics. For me, the story and characters are more important than anything else, and FFVII is decent, if inferior (in my opinion) to the previous and next games in the series. A lot of people will have different opinions on the matter, but it's hard to go wrong for $5.99, especially considering the amount of gameplay you'll get out if if you do like it.

It's a good game. I didn't care for it much when it came out, but I played through it again recently and my impression of it is much better than back in the 90s.

I'd rank the Final Fantasy games in this order:
6 (3 in the US) - One of the best video games ever created

I haven't played the others except some of 8, but I disliked the parts of it I did play. If it ever came out on Steam, I'd give it another shot because I was so wrong about 7.

Instead of doing a remake, perhaps they should release what the ultra 64 version was supposed to be like (if they haven't done so already, I don't really keep with this stuff anymore)... IIRC, the characters had big heads in the ultra 64 jank.

In terms of sheer gameplay and polish, Chrono Trigger owns entire Squaresoft RPGs.

As Crono put it perfectly, FF7 was a big success because of first PS game + first 3D game. They had the perfect cast to appeal young players too. You play as Cloud vs two girls that want you.

You have to read the manga. The Akira anime leaves out so much, it actually doesn't make sense. I've no idea why it is so popular.

If any game deserves a remake its Xenogears. It was never really finished as it sits. Ball got dropped and the game was rushed on the second disc.

There was a sequel. I never played it.

In secret of mana, I got hit with a confuse spell, so my movement pad went backwards. I got bugged and the movement effect never wore off. But it was okay, my brain remapped it for me, so I had no problem moving around. The next game I played, though, I had to relearn how to move.
