Is it worth selling a 7950?

All I'm playing lately is Dota 2 and SC2. Already finished Crysis 3, Farcry 3, etc... nothing demanding on my playlist coming up.

Would you sell a 7950 for ~100 profit and wait for a new gen to come out? Normally this is an obvious yes for me, but I just don't know how long it will take for something to be worth it to come out. 770's still cost a ton, 760's are slower. I don't think I'd want to go slower if it still ate up a good amount of what the 7950 sold for.

I would just take a GTX 640 from work to get by until new games and cards are out... but that is pointless if its going to take a year for a 7950 worthy card to come down to 200 bucks.

I would take the profit and wait a month or two since NVIDIA's next-gen Maxwell series is due to come out by March which should drive all other card prices down even if you don't want a Maxwell. Difficulty is skyrocketing for mining and the LTC/BTC ratio has been falling for weeks, so there is only so long that people will be willing to pay $350 for a 7950... soon that will go to $300, then $200, then back down to $150 which is what brand new 7950s were going for on sale in Oct. 2013. So yes, I would sell your 7950 and wait a month or two and game on your GTX 640, then re-assess in late February.

Made $110 on mine. Using a GTX 460 in the mean time which still runs BF4, FC3 etc.

I agree with blastingcap, sell the 7950 while you can. Then save up about a 100 bucks and pick up a GTX 780. A gtx 770 would only be a slight upgrade/sidegrade from what you have. If you plan on waiting for a new gen card to come up, you might be waiting a long while.

I say you should follow the 3rd unmentioned option, assuming you have affordable power:

3) Use the 7950 to mine for long enough to earn a litecoin or two (5-10 days), then sell the card for a profit. I bet you will make even more money that way, and learn a little about mining cryptocoins, and then you have 2 litecoins you can immediately sell for $23 each or hold onto for when the price reaches $100/coin.

Kingfatty, that's true, you can split the difference. However, I'm pretty sure OP either has no interest in mining or has already mined his fill and wants to get out while card prices are high. Plus electricity isn't free and litecoin prices are falling, not rising so it's not really $23 in profit.

What IS rising is difficulty. Difficulty is skyrocketing so it'll take longer than 5-10 days to mine 2 litecoins. It may take more like 2 weeks. Who knows what prices of 7950s will be 2 weeks from now? Even if coin prices go up a lot, it's 10 to 20 times more profitable to buy and hold coins directly than mine them; this has been true for four straight years now assuming average USA electricity rates.

I don't think they are selling for as much as they were 2-3 weeks ago, on eBay at least. Still high and may be worth it, but they have come down. I tried selling mine but when I couldn't get as much as I wanted, I decided to just keep it.

By the way, since when did eBay get so freaking expensive to sell on? Cuts into your potential profit margin so much, part of the reason I decided to keep mine.

Also, if you want to stick with AMD, it's anybody's guess how long the prices will be inflated and weak supply. I don't want to be without a GPU for so long if things remain like this for a few months.

I would try to sell it and pocket at least $250. Then just tough it out with a slower GPU for a couple of months.

I did try mining, I left the card on overnight and mined .054 of a litecoin

Maybe I'll keep doing that until the card is sold, but really... at least with my extremely limited experience it will take quite a while to get a full coin (was at ~500 kh/s)


I think I'll try to sell it for around 300 and see if I can get it. If I'm not playing games then there is no point not to really.

I sold one of my 7950s for $330 last week. Wouldn't hurt to try and get $300+.

If you can be patient that $300+ will get you a shiny new video card down the line

I've seen new 7950's selling for $600 on eBay, I'm sure you could push $450 if you know what it clocks to and can prove its hash rate

I think you are referring to the listing where someone sold TWO 7950s for $700 recently, but most cards, new or used, are going for more like $300-400. I'm talking cards that actually sold, not pie-in-the-sky idiotic "asking" prices.

Ah, that might have been it. I still think if you can prove a mining hash rate the price will climb. Maybe not $600 though.

Definitely not $600 now or at any point in time. But I agree, if you can get good hashes on it, you can definitely sell it for a higher price. $300 is a pretty realistic price atm for a used 7950. You may be able to get a little higher on ebay, but that extra $$$ will be used to cover the outrageous transaction fees.

OT: Sadly, I get higher hashes on my new 7950 than I do on my 7970... Gotta flash the stock 7970 BIOS to get higher hashes, but stupid win 8 won't let me make a bootable USB drive.... Keep forgetting to do it at work.

I say yes. I sold my bottom-of-the-line Sapphire 7950 3L last week on Ebay for $350 and cleared $295.51 after all fees and shipping. Picked up the Zotac GTX 770 for $336 shipped and sold the bundled game vouchers (Splinter Cell Compilation and Batman Arkham Origins) for $21.56 after fees. Couldn't be happier to back with NVIDIA for a $8.39 upgrade.

The 770 is cooler, quieter (can't hear it at all over my system fans vs the 7950 jet engine), still overclocks OK, doesn't idle at higher power state (higher GPU clocks/Mem clocks/power/temps) with multiple monitors hooked up(!!!), and best of all, I can use Afterburner again instead of that POS TRIXX which never reapplied my 3D clock profile when waking up from sleep. Had to use TRIXX because Afterburner couldn't control voltage on a 3L. Phew...Lot of stress gone.

There is nothing to beware about. Ebay's fees are 10% straight up based on the final sale price of the item which may include additional shipping charges.

As far as paypal goes, I haven't been keeping up with their fees lately, but from the few sub $100 sales I've had several months ago, I don't think they took a cut.

PayPal always takes a cut.

Paypal takes a 2.9% cut of the full sale price (includes anything you charged for shipping) plus another 30 cents (ok???) then eBay also takes 10% of the full sale price.

Yep, you are right. Paypal does always take a cut now that I look at my past transactions. However, it seems like their fees vary and are not always the same. Unlike ebay where it's 10% of the total amount.

ebay changed terms several months ago so small sellers pay a straight 10% fee.. big ones that open "stores" or whatever pay a smaller percentage, but pay to retain their storefront
