Do you think its worth it to buy a GeForce 2 Ultra card now for a decent price ~$370, or wait another month or week for the New NV20 Which would probably cost $500-600. What are the pros and cons of buying now or waiting til later?

Does the average consumer really need such a crazy video card?

i need some advice because I'm really tempted to wait for the NV20, but I am also really temptd to get the Ultra at such a low cost.

thanks

If the NV20 kicks ass and if it is priced properly then the best thing that it will achieve is to reduce the prices of the other Geforce 2 cards.

I would wait.

Of course, if it fails to live up to expectations then it might be better to buy now, but I doubt that Nvidia will fumble the ball after working so hard to reach the top.

Its not impossible, just look at 3dfx.

NV-20 will be by far the fastest, most feature rich card on the planet, with full Opengl 1.2 (plus including their own cool extensions like combiners), and DX8 support.

Whether it's worth the money is another story.

Not really. Most people can get by with what they've got now. Only those hardcore gamers that need to upgrade to the latest and greatest hardware are the only ones that will buy it after its initial release. The average gamer won't pay the $500+ they'll be asking for it. It would be better for people who are planning on upgrading to just buy a regular GeForce 2 GTS, then upgrade to the GeForce 3 after the prices have fallen, and more games take advantage of its features. Why pay a premium price for features that, at this point, are not widely used?

With the advent of the GeForce 3, yes, the Ultra prices will go down, but... how long and or IF before the NV20's prices go down... I highly doubt within the next year... Unless ATI could rival their NV20 with a better much faster product, but, I haven't heard anything from ATI...
So, is it pretty much safe to say that the NV20's prices will be steady at around $500-$600 for the upcoming year? and how low would the Ultra's price be dropped? $100? ish?

I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I like having the best of things..

call me spoiled, or call me stupid, it's just nice to have bragging rights sometimes.

$500-$600 is a lot to shell out for something that lasts 6 months and probably won't get me laid.

The prices will be high for 4-5 months, then will probably drop down to the sub $400 level. It really depends on which companies decide to manufacture them, and what options they decide to put on them. Deluxe versions will be outrageously priced. A bare bones GeForce 3 card from someone like Visiontek will probably sell for a lower price, and Creative Labs will probably have a good price on it as well--say $399-$450. It all depends on how they want to market the card, and what features they intend to include with it.

Been there, done that.

if the NV20 doesn't require a frickin' soldering iron to get the 2d to an acceptable quality, I'll be mighty tempted to pick one up b4 I "go" away (heh...we'll see if it happens this time)

Waiting a week or so won't hurt anything will it? Then you can compare the differences, not to mention there could well be a decent price cut on the Ultras, only time will tell for sure.

With less than a week to go before the NV20 is announced, rushing out and buying a new nVidia board is simply foolish.

Hey, I was a Voodoo guy from the beginning. My V5 5500 fried on me, right about the time 3dfx tanked. I finally was drawn to the dark side. Now my master is the CL Annihilator2 Ultra.

I already spent enough on video cards for a while. Besides, the CL GTS2 Ultra is more card than I know what to do with for now and the forseeable future. By the time I upgrade, I'll go for the GTS3 Ultra at under $400. So I'm going to sit pat.
