Is it worth upgrading an EVO 4G yet?

I'm eligible for an upgrade through Sprint...wondering if there's anything worth stepping up to, or if I should wait another year or so. Aside from the terrible battery life (I've been using an extended battery so I can go all day without recharging, but the phone is much thicker), I'm happy with it.

If you're eligible for an upgrade i'd wait for the new evo 4g lte, or the galaxy nexus if you prefer aosp.

There are always better phones a few months out. I'd wait until the Galaxy S III is released and pick it up as soon as you can - maximize the amount of time you spend with as new a phone as possible, and as long as you're happy with Sprint, minimize the time you have a free subsidy just sitting around doing nothing.

It's looking like the S3 is a few months out at the very least, especially if you're here in the States.

I was in the same position as you. I just recently sold my Evo 4G and picked up an unlocked Nexus for use on another network. I couldn't be happier to be away from Sprint and now I'm not tied down to a contract. When the S3 comes out I'll probably sell my Nexus and pick up one of those and still come out ahead.

The Nexus on T-Mobile's network (or AT&T's if you prefer) is a whole new world coming from the Evo on Sprint.

This. Wait for an LTE phone. I have loved Sprint since I have been on it. But since they have been upgrading the towers for the last couple months, the only thing that has kept me from going elsewhere is the WiMax. The 3g has been pretty bad. Hopefully when the LTE towers open later this year, they will have more efficient LTE radios. I would wait to see if that is the case.

LTE is a non issue for Sprint customers in all honesty. Unless you're insanely lucky and happen to live in an area they announced as an LTE starting area you're probably years away from getting LTE on Sprint.

Yeah, no 4G coverage in Phoenix yet.

I have a hard time letting go of my SERO plan, though ($55 after tax/fees for unlimited data and more minutes than I'll ever use), so I will probably stay with Sprint.

A few months ago I'd say yes, because I went from the Evo to the SGS2 (AT&T) and it's been a pretty significant upgrade. However, people are anticipating the SGS3 announcement - so you might as well wait and see what that is.

Yeah, but it could also be close to a year before it makes its way to Sprint. Either way, the Evo 4G LTE or Galaxy Nexus would be a very good upgrade.

I should have been more clear - I was saying to wait and see if he was willing to explore buying a retail phone and activating it elsewhere. If he upgraded on Sprint, that's another contract, and I wasn't sure if OP wanted another subsidized phone or was willing to go retail with no contract.

I believe OP is in the Phoenix area, which doesn't have Sprint LTE coverage according to my quick google search.

In any event, the GN is an excellent choice, as are the SGS2 variants that use the Exynos chipset - I believe those are the i9100 (Int'l) and i777 (AT&T) only. Not sure if Sprint's has that.

I could go either way. I don't mind a contract, since I highly doubt I can beat my plan anywhere else...but if I could get unlimited data, unlimited mobile to mobile and 4G for under 60/mo I'd consider it.

You still on SERO? It's unbeatable, don't even try!

Yeah, $30 SERO plan + $10 SERO Premium + $10 4G fee = $55.xx after everything. 500 anytime, unlimited mobile to mobile, nights/weekends, text, and data. It's really nice not having to worry about going over on anything, haha.

I'll hold out and see how the SGS3 is - thanks!

Sprint annoys me with this paying for something you don't receive. Why am I paying 10 bucks extra when I don't even get consistant Wimax coverage?

That's been gone over 1000 times. Sprint's answer is it isn't a "4G fee" it is a smartphone data fee.

Sprint's SGS2 has Exynos. It is T-Mobile that lacks a Exynos phone.

Yeah, don't buy it. When it was initially sold as a 4g fee. If you have unlimited data in your plan, why would there be a smartphone data fee. Ex. I have the Sero plan. I pay $10 for "premium data" (sero P) if I buy a smartphone. Now if I buy an android, they add another 10. i guess that is for premium premium data.

No one buys it, but they do it and they are the cheapest. It's simple a rate increase without being a rate increase to break contracts. Just as the plan being split different for family plans to cut corp discounts down. Instead of a 3 line being 119 - discount + 20 now its 110 - discount + 40. Then they bumped the admin fees from .50 to 1.50 a line too.... and doubled upgrade fees.

Sprint is becoming one of those nickle and diming companies. They shoul djust be upfront with their costs. Anyhow, I think I've hijacked the thread enough.

My trusty Evo 4g purchased a week after it was initially released gets retired a little earlier than I had anticipated--the MikG 3.1 ROM kept that thing running like a champion. I ordered a Galaxy Nexus directly from Sprint last night and it's scheduled to arrive tomorrow. My jaw damn near hit the floor at how quickly they filled the order.

I thought about waiting for the Evo 4g LTE but decided it was time for a change (and AOSP). Waiting for the SGS3 didn't even figure into my thinking considering Sprint likely would not get that device for a LONG time.

They all do it unfortunately... $10 data fee or $30 texting fee... pick your poison.
