I have a Core 2 Quad Q8400 with G41 chipset. I was planning to buy Intel's new Ivy bridge, i7 3770. Since it is said it will be priced similar to the present SB is it worth the wait? What is the future ahead after Ivy Bridge?

Will I see significant performance differences between Q8400 and i7 3770?
I'm going to parrot pretty much everything said so far. Going from a Q8400 to either a 2600k or 3770k will be very noticeable. I was in a similar quandry as yourself on whether to wait and get a 3770k or 2600k now. I shopped around and got a good deal on a NIB 2600k, so I went with the 2600k. I pocketed the money saved (roughly $100). Now I will wait for Haswell.

Basically it boils down to this:

If you are going to pay full price for the CPU's, then get IB (5-10% more performance for close to the same money). But if you can shop around and be patient, you can get a deal on SB.

If you don't OC, get IB (5-10% more performance). If you OC, you might want to wait see what the real reviews say on IB, then make a decision.

He doesn't even start any real stability tests until he's over 1.2v, and disables AVX just to do so.

I see what you are saying - no AVX used for OCCT in their testing.
However, there was no immediate failure either with AVX at 1.17v in the 5 pass linX run with Win 7 Sp1.

But still a 5 hour run at OCCT at 1.22v (in the following pages) or over a 1 hour run at Prime95 at 1.248v (myself) isn't random either - there is enuf consistency among the posted chips out there to say it is possible to get 4.5ghz at 1.17-1.248v stable at reasonable temps.

On the flip side I'm keeping my 1.328-1.344v stable 4.9ghz 2500k.
Nowadays it is very hard to find a Sandy that will do over 4.6ghz stable.

Peace bro, I respect your opinion. No need for any more quibbling over 1.17-1.248v

Users who can wait for a little longer can they wait for Haswell? It is expected to be launched by next year March. Hardly a year wait. So should users feel major difference with Haswell as Ivy Bridge will see only little (5-10%) difference. So if we can should wait for Haswell?
The difference between HW (a new arch) and IB should be greater than the diff of IB and SB.

So Intel said HW will be out in March 2013. A year ago they also said IB will be out late 2011. I think they've learned from AMD that its OK to be a bit off with release dates. I wouldnt bet a brass farthing on March 2013.
