Is it worthwhile to make this a server?

A buddy of mine gave me an old computer that he couldn't get to work fully. I have intentions to make it my personal file/web/application/music server. The motherboard is a ACORP 6A815ED/EPD/EPD1. There are currently 2 WD200 HD but I also have:

1 WD600
1 DPTA-372050
1 DTLA-307030
1 Maxtor 51536U3
1 MDC015-0091

I did some searching already and it seems like the max RAM I can use is 512MB. Now this server will have at most 1 user when it comes to the application server or the web server but there is a possibility for a lot of file movement when it comes to the music files.

Is it worthwhile to use this set up for the server?

If this current set up isn't good any suggestions for a mb that will mix with these HDs?

Here's the specs on your board: 6A815ED - ACORP

ACORP went out of business quite a while ago, so you don't have any support.

You can check here for BIOS updates: WIM'S BIOS

It was manufactured around 2000-2001, and was a fairly popular dual processor Pentium III motherboard , so it'll run any PATA drive. You may need to search the web for a chipset driver, and I'd definitely try to find a users manual. Being a server board means ECC memory as well.

But for free, and if you're willing to do the legwork to get get it running, should work fine for your purpose. Just don't expect any blazing data transfer rates.

Sometimes free is good but in this case not so sure. I'm thinking warm and noisy between the processor coolers and the hard drives. Also not likely very efficient when it comes to energy management.

Did you get just the board with nothing else - no processor or memory?

A modern NAS would probably be faster, quieter, and use less power. Higher WAF as well.

No it's a fully up and running comp with case, ram, and extra processor (currently only has the one installed).

And when I turn it on it is kind of loud....maybe it is only worth the case as it stands.

I've given away several AMD dually systems the last year - they were working fine and had plenty of memory, but they were all 6-10 years old. I was going to use them for bench purposes but the noise alone made them impractical.

Hearing that it's probably a better idea for me to scrap this save for the case considering the inner parts are also close to 10 years old. The app server is more important anyway and a buddy gave me an old IBM eServer he found in his basement (was a POS for a local resturant). At least that way I shave a few years off the hardware I use.
