Are we talking about another Johnny Depp besides the one who plays Jack Sparrow?

And the same character in Chocolate Factory, and the same character in Edward Scissor Hands, and teh same character in Demon Of Barber Street and the same................

The only fucking difference is the makeup

That doesn't make an actor talented or versatile

Finding Neverland
Blow
Sleep Hollow
Donnie Brasco

I thought those were all pretty different compared to the crazy characters he plays. Willie WOnka, Edward Scissor Hands and Sweeny Todd were all pretty different characters in terms of personality and demeaner. THe only consistency is the heavy makeup

What's Eating Gilbert Grape is evidence that both Depp and DiCaprio can act.

I think depp is pretty versatile..he has just been type casted somewhat

something i've always bitched about..is that his looks or "costumes" are too similar..it always looks too much like johnny depp..the movies where he doesnt look like himself he shines because it doesnt constantly remind you that its johnny dep

i know that some people think a good actor can overcome looking like themselves but i disagree, especially as you've seen more of their movies

Leonardo DiCaprio is the best actor of this generation, I firmly believe that.

thats surprising. i thought most of you guys wouldnt have ever mentioned him because hes like, all pretty boy etc. i definitely think he is a GREAT actor. he has been in so many movies that i feel warrant him to get the praise.

He doesn't only do girly movies. His more recent films are action.

this is true, but even in the older films he was excellent. i actually really thought his romeo in romeo & juliet was freaking great.

ohhh, and gilbert grape!!! crap, gotta dl that!

when he did pirates, i didnt really see HIM, i saw the character. he really was great in those films. in fact, i dont think i saw Depp at all. he was not even there.

I tend to agree with that. The "pretty boy" stigma is only a result of Titanic. Everything before and after has been anything but. He's very gifted, and it doesn't hurt that a dude like Scorsese has more or less adopted him as his new DeNiro.

I know it was just one role, in "No Country for Old Men", but the actor I have been most impressed by, in recent memory, is Javier Bardem.

Actually, that reminded me I really like Josh Brolin. Great in No Country, Valley of Elah, American Gangster, and Milk.

Id vote Morgan Freeman myself, but im a huge fan of his. On that list id pick Dicaprio for acting talent, but i like Brad Pitts movies better.

Funny. Thats how I see most actors . Jeff Goldblum is the worst example.

Its rare to see a performance like Hoffmans in midnight cowboy or Charlize Theron in monster. Bradd Pitt was great in true romance but in anythign else he just annoys me.

even with the age difference and the same time their careers took off, DiCaprio's talent is undeniable and IMO has much more in depth roles and diversity.

Oh I agree. I was just pointing out that the individual's age is irrelevant in terms of considering what "acting generation" they belong to.

McCauley Culkin belongs in the same generation.

Umm I would say he is a good actor but not the best. I mean his characters in Edward Scissor hands and Pirates of the Caribbean were really good, but I don't think they alone put him over the top of everyone else.

Edward Norton's work is impressive, and his work in American History X was really really good.
Kevin Spacey should be noted, as he has played a good amount of roles successfully.

Tom Cruise is just Tom Cruise..I woudln't say he is a great actor.

Tom Hanks is obviously really talented, but he plays the same role in a lot of movies..Forest Gump was amazing performance tho.

Will Smith is really good but he also hasn't done anything that is crazy omg acting skills that I can think of. He can deff can do a range of emotions and make a totally believable performance, but I cant think of a film where it is like...is that will smith..really?

After watching Public Enemy..Christian Bale is obviously limited to certain roles.

Leonardo is amazing...you know what..i always disliked him as a kid, but I would have to put him up to at least 2nd place..

And Brad Pitt is obviously talented as well.

I guess It would be A tie of Decaprio, Norton, and Spacey for me.

I saw 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape' before Leonardo was a house hold name. I actually thought they got a retarded kid to play that role. That is how good he is. Only later did i find out who he was at that young age.

Poll sucks.

Most of them are AAA movie stars who just happened to garner some talent halfway through their careers.

These people don't make the movie better, the *directors* are to credit for making the movies better.

DiCaprio is decent though. Anyone seen This Boy's Life? It was probably De Niro that brought out the best in him though.

He was acting there?

I'm sorry, but anyone who was on Growing Pains and Titanic are forever tainted in my book
Favorite movies of his would be Critters 3, What's eating Gilbert Grape and the Quick and the Dead all of which were made very early in his carer.

Whereas Depp, you'd have to go back to the beginning of his career to find movis of no redeemable quality... Cry Baby the only one coming to mind.

Ha, who decided that definition of "acting generation" - hell, who coined that term? Christian Bale was acting in the 80s, when Steve Martin was a big success.. I wouldn't say they're the same generation, or "acting generation"
