Is joining a fraternity the equivalent to a minor in douchebaggery?

You never hear anything positive regarding college fraternities and the associated Greek life.

It seems you get lots of binge drinking, homoerotic activities during the hazing period. Shit like the elephant walk et..

Parties that primarily consist of drinking to a stupor and trying to bang unconscious sorority chicks, rape etc..

Lots of mass cheating.

And other miscellaneous douchebaggery.

Lately they seem to be making the news as well, I guess social media is exposing more of what goes on.

You're not asking the right people? Joining a fraternity was one of the best decisions ever for me.

I guess they tell themselves as long as it occurs during a hazing ritual, it's not gay. Lol

Depends on the university culture. At some schools, fraternities are 90% about the party aspect. At other schools, there's a huge networking aspect.

Yes. Everyone knows this.

They can help you meet people, but mostly they're just cliques of drunk assholes and their associated bitches, plus half of them hate each other, and then there's the drama between all the greek tribes. Meaningless drama is a way of life for so many of them.

ummm ... i hear plenty of good things about fraternities.

you hear only bad things about them by the nerds on these forums and other nerds who are scared to socialize.

personally i had no desire to go into one, didn't need to buy a friend. went to tons of frat parties that were awesome though. i go on a golf trip sometimes that happens annually and is organized by my friends frat, and it's over 40 of them.

I always consider fraternities a place that people go to when they are too pathetic to make friends and socialize themselves. So they want a system in which you are forced to socialize and make friends.

I think it's pathetic personally, but I guess I see the use for it when people are given jobs, etc... through it after they graduate.

About a third of the guys in my fraternity just didn't understand how to do it right and ruined it for the rest of us. One of the big lessons of frat life is that, with good presentation, you can get away with almost anything. Throwing burning couches off the roof while screaming obscenities at the house next door does not constitute a quality presentation and will get your charter revoked.

So 1/3 of you were ignorant douches. 2/3 of you were educated douches.....right?

Many years ago when I was a freshman in college I lived in a dorm across the street from a frat. During finals week everyone was studying one night when a bunch of drunken frat boys started yelling at the dorm, saying things like "what a bunch of dorm faggots".
Then one of the dorm residents yelled out to them "I'm not the one living in a house with fifty guys".
Didn't hear a peep out of them after that.

Frat houses are too small to house all members.

Frat houses are for meetings, hangouts and parties....sorta like a club.

You can make a lot of life-long friends in frats and help network the shit out of your career, especially at Ivies. Frat reunions after graduation are great, especially for weddings of members, bro-vacations, etc.

Not at larger schools. Our frats were like small hotels. I can understand why some people would choose to join, but overall I think it's rather "meh." (which is why, obviously, it wasn't for me)

I do think it also depends on the size of the school. I visited some friends at smaller schools and if you weren't involved in Greek activities, you were really out of the loop. At large schools there so much opportunity that you really don't need frats for parties/networking.

also depends on the fraternity...I was in a 15-30 member fraternity with an 8-15 room house (depending on the year). not all fraternities are the same, which is why it's important to find a fraternity with similar values.
