The original one? Yes absolutely. The remake one with Jackie Chan and Will Smith's kid? Nope.,

"Wash on....wash off".

"Karate is here.....karate is not here".
I thought the one with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith was just fine. It's not really trying to be like the original either it's just more of a modern take in the 21st century. I enjoyed it.

Its ok, so do or do not its up to you.

BUT, if you want a really good movie with Ralph in it, then watch Crossroads[My Cousin Vinny] instead

Do not yt the ending, for you will ruin the entire rest of the movie if you do.
FTFY.

It's a pretty standard "kid get's bullied and learns to fight back" story.

Except it's not:

Daniel is the bully.

damn millenials. always think they're so smart.

this was mentioned earlier in the thread and yes, Cobra Kai directly addresses this not only through the main plot, but a very specific exposition from Johnny giving his perspective of what happened in those years. Yes, it's clever, and it's pretty genius to consider how the dude that "got his girlfriend taken away" and was always bothered by that shrimpy kid could be so bitter. ...I think it's legit, but the reality is that Danny was just simple black and white eighties villain. In reality: Daniel didn't steal Ally...Johnny was a fucking dick to her. Johnny's meathead confusion over what a dick he really was doesn't really change that

it took Cobra Kai to give him a backstory (spoiled step son with shitty dad...surprise! also bullied by bigger kids until he learned karate!) to make that perspective legit.

You need to watch it if only to expand your lexicon of movie quotes that could come up with friends (assuming we're ever around friends again).

Sweep the leg.

Get him a body bag.

Finish him!

No mercy.

You don't want to be odd-man-out when everyone else is chuckling from a well-timed "sweep the leg" quote and then ruin your friendship with a "what's that from?" question.

Dear filthy posters,

The need to concur on how to prove Karate Kid should be watched or not.

So yes, it should be watched if you like 80s movies. Otherwise amoeba.

The remake one does not have the charm and chemistry between the two main characters as the original .Name a good/funny/charming quote from the remake one. I can't except "Mom, this is not karate, it is kung fu".

OP needs to watch the original if he wants to understand Cobra Kai better and get all the references.

the RLM review posted earlier makes a pretty good point that because Karate Kid is so thoroughly established in culture, that nearly everyone recognizes the references and phrases, that you probably don't need to watch it. Also, the show runs a lot of clips of the old movies, to very explicitly draw direct connections to what they are doing (it's actually kind of annoying and they shouldn't do that; but I suppose it is meant for people that haven't/don't want to see the old stuff)

There are a lot of tiny little references that you wouldn't get, though, but that doesn't really ad much to the TV show.

That RLM review is spot-on, though. Pretty much detailed everything I thought about the show and exactly why it works--they even mentioned my point about how bizarre it must be to live in a town that is regularly terrorized by angsty highschool karate dojos, like it's Westside Karate every other day, lol.

Im in my late 30’s never bothered to watch it. Cobra Kai looks interesting figured I should watch the source material first if it’s not terrible.

With the proper mindset, it's a fun movie:

1. It's an 80's movie
2. You have to have the mindset of a kid growing up without Internet. Take your adult hat off & put your 10-year-old-kid hat on. Then watch it & try to connect to the story the director has setup, rather than critiquing it as a film.

As we get older, there's kind of a point where you mature up a bit & stop operating mentally under "authority". Once that clicks, movie enjoyment shifts a bit because you realize all movies are more or less stupid. As kids, we get sucked into the conversation of the movie & don't see the movie as a bunch of paid actors being filmed. As adults, it's harder to use our imagination & slip into that mindset that we had as kids, where we simply accepted things as-is & didn't audit them. Good directors are better about sucking us into their story than others. Like, when Back to the Future comes on, it always captures my attention because it's just fun - the actors did a good job, the story is compelling, the music is great, etc.

So you kind of have to rewind mentally & bit willing to put on your kid-hat & just enjoy the story, because if you let your internal agenda as an adult with adult emotions get in the way, you're not going to enjoy it very much. If you've seen the Adventures of Bill & Ted & can enjoy & appreciate it for what it is, then you can watch Karate Kid & enjoy it. Otherwise it's just going to be a lame movie.

Also, only AFTER you've watched the original movie, watch this:

The thing I wrote in my post above is more or less how movies work - as kids, we're all emotional, the world is small, and everything is about how you feel & how life impacts YOU, personally. Politics, bosses, deadlines, all of those things don't exist. The world exists solely of you, your family, and your teachers. So running into an old guy who takes you in & teaches you how to beat kids up isn't creepy, it's the opportunity of the lifetime! So that's the thing, you can't employ logic for these types of movies, you have to employ emotion, and a very specific frame of reference: being a kid where you're the center of the universe, the world is small & consists of your family & your town, and everything kind of centers & circles around your experience.

It's not selfish or even self-centered, it's just how we operate as kids. I remember some kids hit this point in like 5th grade & got super-jaded because they could see what was up with life & had matured mentally sooner than everyone else. For me, it was probably more like early college lol. Good movie directors are more careful to work hard to integrate a show that will suck adults in as well as kids. Like, the first Ironman did a fantastic job of that - a superhero movie that kids could enjoy, but that adults would also love. Not cheesy like the Batman & Robin with the Terminator, but really tailored to hit both age group audiences.

Plus, the thing is, a movie doesn't have to be technically "good" as long as it's entertaining, because those are the movies we fall in love with. Some of the best movies have some of the dumbest premises when you really dissect them:

I wonder what will happen when Johnny finds out that Homelander used his heat vision to drill 2 holes in his old girl friends head?

Man, Johnny's gonna sweep that leg so hard that the earth falls out of orbit!

(on the plus side, that does mean Elisabeth Shue is available for at least some appearances in s3 of Cobra Kai...)

If interested in Cobra Kai (which i just finished and loved); i’d watch the originals first. Just remember when they were made and think like a teen of that time, if possible.
