Is Kennedy Space Center worth a visit?

I have always been fascinated by the space program and would love to see a shuttle launch in person. Do they have any other cool stuff to see and do or is the good stuff kept under wraps?

YES! It's a great place to visit. Walking under a Saturn V is truly awesome.

I have been down there at least 3 times. I try to go there every time I am in the area. It is an excellent trip. They offer a tour that brings you on a bus all around the compound. You get to see the launch pad up and close (very close, within 100 yards). They have other great things to do at their visitor center building too. You will leave knowing a lot more than you already did, and you will want to sign up for a spot within NASA's program. Also, if you have kids, bring them. It would be inspirational. They have a program where you and your family gets to meet and have lunch with former astronauts. Also, their IMAX movies kick @ss.

When I went they went through a mock liftoff in the control center and our tour went through the Vehicle Assembly Building too.
It was great.

Really? That's too bad. Yes, that was a long time ago, but I don't see why they'd keep people out of it, it's just a BIG empty room. Unless, with the shuttle program it might be seldom empty.

Is that the huge building with an American flag the size of a basketball court painted on it? When I went there last year it was just a drive by. But there really isnt much to see, and the tall doors are open to look in. You get to see the crawler up and close at least.

Agree with Batti-I thought walking into the room where the Saturn V is located is jaw-dropping awesome.

That's it. The thing that stuck out was that there was a door open in the roof that supposedly was 20 ft. square and it looked like a pin hole. They have fans running to keep clouds from forming and it raining inside.

I'd love to see a launch live myself but I always seem to be working.

I guess I'll just have to make do with giving a 'Go' for launch.

Definitely! I got the inside tour of Johnson Space Center when I interviewed there (sat in the control room of the Apollo missions). It was pretty sweet, but I actually think the public tour at KSC is a bit better.

Can't really tell you, OP. Last time I went, we were still putting Saturn V rockets up for Apollo missions!

I thought it was pretty cool when I went. My Mom lives 30 minutes south of there...I still would like to see a Shuttle launch someday. Trouble is, you could book a trip and the launch gets scrubbed. I predict I'll be spending more time there though in the next couple years since my sister is buying my Mom's 43' sailboat and she's keeping it there.

Thanks for the replies. Going to have to find a way to get there. Might aim for the Discovery launch in April.

I'm pulling this thread back from the death. I'm heading to Cape Canaveral next week (won't get to see a launch, sadly.)

Best I can find for tickets is ~$35 per adult - anyone know some place to get them cheaper or is that the going rate.
