There is a odd problem with my router. According to the logs my HP printer used the wifi router the whole night and i know for a fact that my printer was off and there is no way in hell that it could connect to my router.

The reason why i want MAC filtering is that in India its not legal to keep your network unprotected and WEP slowed things down a bit. This is not the first time i suspected foul play as my transfer speed and internet speed flux's a lot around night time but i did not think it was such a big deal.

Now the problem is that i know i cant change the MAC address of my HP Printer and if i make the MAC address unauthorized i would not be able to put my printer on the wifi network.

So is there anyway i can hook up the printer to wifi without useing WEP, etc. Any idea's??

what make/model router? turn on WPA/WPA2, disable MAC filtering and call it a day. if your router/printer only supports WEP leave it on and disable MAC filtering, or just buy newer more capable devices.

encryption is done in hardware...unless there is an issue with the router, your claim that it "slowed things down a bit" is laughable.

MAC address is usually embedded in the Network card firmware.

That so call changing MAC Address it Not really changing the card's address but rather using Windows to reflect a different MAC through software.

Since the Printer is Not a computer it can not run software to "change" its MAC address.

There is a lot of solution (as Jlazzaro posted above).

You can also use wire interface for the printer or connect it to a computer.

Otherwise switch On the WEP each night before you go to sleep, or switch Off the MAC filter before you print

BTW, the foul play can be someone who spoofed your printer MAC to his computer and use your Wireless. If this is the case changing MAC or even using WEP would Not help. If there is a guy in your neighborhood that can do such things, you probably need new hardware that can do WPA/WPA2

Is it possible that you did not change router's Time Zone?

Its a old ME102 i know that there will be a hit because its written on the manual. I know this is very old but i like it a lot and if possible i want it to be useful for as long as possible.

The thing is hooked to a old P3 and gives the internet through out the whole house "This creates the inner circle". Other than this i have a WRT54 GL for lan and gaming "This forms the outer circle".

If anyone need's to use the internet changing the router from WRT54 to ME102 would do the trick. But if suppose i do have to kill the old combo "P3 + ME102" i will have to downgrade the security of my wireless lan from WPA to WEP because the 2 laptops don't support WPA.

EDIT:- Forgot to add the WRT54 circle extends quite a bit further in my neighborhood and is shared amongst 3 houses including myself and 2 friends useing WDS.

PCMCIA cards that do WPA are dirt cheap these days.

If the Laptops have internal Wireless Cards PCMCIA or USB Wireless can be installed and done with.

If the PCMCIA/USB is not needed it elsewhere it can be Unplugged, and then be plugged again when needed with No addi9tional effort.

In other words, in USA terms, you are risking whole Network for $30.

Guess that you and jlazzaro are right have to upgrade the internet wifi network and merge it with the LAN network. So called the local store has WPC54GS in stock and WPC54G soon to be. Sadly its about $59 per piece "Must be import tax or something" will wait for the WPC54G price and will buy then.

On a different note how can i block my friends from accessing my internet but let them use the LAN, etc via the wifi??
