Tell ya what-come Monday, sit quietly for a moment and contemplate what it must have been like wading through the surf at Omaha Beach against withering machine gun fire. It also became a long weekend increasingly devoted to shopping, family gatherings, fireworks, trips to the beach, and national media events such as the Indianapolis 500 auto race, held since 1911 on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.
Today someone asked me what I was doing for the big weekend, and when I asked what was so big about it, she was in disbelief. Honestly, I thought Memorial Day was in February or something, and that it was some other day that people usually celebrated over the weekend.
Memorial Day is for the dead soldiers. Veterans day is for the living soldiers?
All I know is that lately, most holidays, have just turned into commercial holidays.
The big deal about Memorial Day:
1. A day off work.
2. An excuse to party, overeat and drink to excess.
3. For people in the military or loved ones in the military, a reason to remember the fallen.
4. For people not related to the military, to give lip service to #3 when they really care much more about #1 and #2.
Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed a lot to the general public's nonchalant observance of Memorial Day.
