MB is the inventor of the automobile, the oldest car company in the world. They are selling world-wide, and have much more experience in quality engineering, and in marketing on an international scale. Chrysler was selling only in North America, and that market (as big as it is) is too small to survive. Chrysler had a good time just before they merged, so did Rover before BMW bought them. Insiders know very well, what really happened in both cases.
MB has already invested so much money in Chrysler, that a lot of investores and fond managers start to worry about MB. MB was naive, when they merged with Chrysler, they did not really understand, what was going on there, and now they have to pay for it.
BMW, was not naive, but simply stupid, they were truely cheated and did not realize.
What's going on now, is only good for Chrysler, because after the restructuring, you have maybe the fittest and meanest car company in the world.
I understadn that US citizens feel for Chrysler. But in most other countries, not only Germany, people see it in a very different way. It's Chrysler which is dragging down an automotive icon, and not the other way around.
