Is my cat in heat?

It started about 3 weeks ago. She decided to find some alternatives to the litter box. First it was dirty clothes on the floor, so I made sure to keep those picked up. Then she decided to broaden her horizons to my bed. I assure you, doing laundry at 4am when you want to be sleeping is not fun, especially when they just jacked up the price on the washers and dryers to $1.25, which just so happened to be $.25 more than I had in quarters, and of course there were no change machines. But I digress. The next day she did it again. The day after, I watched her like a hawk. When she went in the bedroom, I went in the bedroom and used my laptop, otherwise I watched her from my desktop. Any time I left the house, I shut her in the bathroom. That night I plopped into my bed confident that there was no way she could have possibly peed on it, and my thought process pretty much went like, "OH, YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME." Late night laundry again. She's a freaking urine ninja. One night she even escaped her bathroom imprisonment and left her mark by the cover of darkness.

Aside from her newly developed stealth urinating abilities, she's also learned to meow at the top of her lungs. And the bottom of her lungs. And well beyond the lung capacity you could possibly fathom an 8 pound cat containing. All at the same time. Sometimes it's a low mrow. Sometimes it's a loud shriek like you might expect to hear from a kid being run over by a drunk icecream truck driver. Sometimes it sounds like a bullfrog swallowed a goose. It's always loud. So, after my long overdue slumber is postponed another two hours for the bed cleaning ritual, I'm still not allowed to sleep because an air raid siren makes less noise than this cat. I actually have a recording that I might be able to post. She goes nuts when I play it back, running around looking for the source.

On top of all that, I can't pet anywhere near her hind end without that half of her body losing control. She basically flattens down, sticks her tail up in the air, and does this funny waddle thing. It's kind of funny because she can't walk away from it even if she wants to. She has to waddle her way out of your reach, and even once she's free, she looks like she's part of the Ministry of Silly Walks, or perhaps rode one of those spinning rides at the amusement park for the first time. She's also been extremely "rubby". She's rubbing up against anything and everything -- considerably more so than cats normally do.

The catch is, she was already spayed a year ago. I took her into the vet, but the people there steadfastly denied the possibility that she could be in heat after being spayed. Naturally she was so freaked out by the whole vet visit that she didn't exhibit any of her normal abnormal behaviors, so that whole trip ended up being a waste of time, money, and skin.

I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do here, but I need to do something. Do I try to get her spayed again (at a different vet)? She actually went through this one other time a few months ago and eventually returned to "normal". She never peed on my bed, though, and it seems to be lasting longer this time.

Edit: Changed "nuts" to "crazy" because the non-sexual use of the word "nuts" is apparently foreign to some people.

I'm sorry, but I'm not reading that.

Cat in heat + mentioning of your nuts = vote for ban

Jesus fvcking Christ, no kidding, every single reply so far has been about that. ATOT is becoming more immature, if that's even possible in the first place.

It sounds like she's either in heat, going through menopause, or has bladder problems.
Either she wants something in her rear, out of her rear, or there's pain in her rear.

I wasn't being serious, I gave humor to a few people and that's what matters You should know by now to expect such things on ATOT

Originally I didn't think it was bladder problems because it seemed very deliberate, and when she went, she went. It wasn't like she leaked a little here and there or couldn't hold it in. She usually scoped out the crime scene pretty thoroughly on the few occasions I caught her doing it. I'm starting to wonder a little now, though, because when she does use the litter box now, she sits there for a while and only a little comes out. Usually she leaves baseball-sized globs in the litter box (how she holds that much in her bladder to begin with is a bit of a mystery), but now they're only bounceball-sized. She has also been licking her private parts a lot. That doesn't explain the howling, though, if that's what it is.

Maybe she is distressed or uncomfortable in her enviroment. Are you a pet abuser?

If Boost Mobile wasn't around you could ask that pet psychiatrist, but unforunately Boost Mobile is around.

Well, it's spayed so not that.

I think you are the lucky owner of a psycho-cat. The only cure is to drive about 200 miles away from your house and see if those stories in the National Enquirer about cats finding their way back home are true or not.

Give her some relief with a Q-tip. I know it's gross, but I have read that it works.

second that

deep qtipin' FTW

Wouldn't that leave bits of cotton in...you know what, I don't even want to think about it.

All the behavior the OP mentioned seems to correspond to being in heat, though...you sure they did a good job on that spaying?

Qtip spells relief? ehh... I don't think I want to try that one. jagec: I'm quite unsure at this point, but how would I check? The cats we dissected in biology were already dead, making them considerably easier to work with, and I've pretty much forgotten everything I learned in biology anyway.

That's the thing...you'd have to cut her open to see...or get another professional opinion.

OMG.

"because when she does use the litter box now, she sits there for a while and only a little comes out"

Sounds like a urinary tract infection. Get her to a vet asap.

Do cats get kidney stones? One of my cats might have had one - he had blood in his urine, and had trouble going, and would sometimes select a carpet as a suitable litter box replacement. Could have been a bladder infection though, I don't remember exactly anymore. We got him the special diet food that's supposed to be low in magnesium, and better for a cat's urinary tract health.

I don't think I'm going to have any more cats once the current two die. Sure they're cute and charming and all, but they have a few behaviors that I dislike:
1) Throwing up, preferably on something that is soft and difficult to clean
2) Mistaking rugs for litter boxes
3) Crapping in the litter box, getting something caught in the back there that won't let go, and then running crazed around the house until it falls away
4) If that fails, run to find the nearest rug and use it as toilet paper in a most undignified manner
5) Sneezing in your face
6) The fact that they walk in their litter boxes, and then walk all over the rest of the house....yuck. Go use your toilet, stick your feet in it, and then just walk around like normal.

The only pets I'm figuring on having in the future might be ball pythons and perhaps boa constrictors. They can be confined to a specific area without any psychological damage, and they can be bred to produce babies that can fetch a decent price. Do it carefully and you can get albino's or unusual patterns that can go for hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Anyway, OP - your cat. I suggest another vet trip. Maybe they could do something with a urine sample (wring a sheet out into a sealable container perhaps?).
On top of all that, I can't pet anywhere near her hind end without that half of her body losing control. She basically flattens down, sticks her tail up in the air, and does this funny waddle thing.
I wonder if she's in pain from something, like the kidney stone.

My A/C is a loud window unit in my bedroom and I also have a pretty loud fan running, and the cat is on the other side of the apartment, but you can still hear it pretty clearly.
Listening to that, it sounds like she is in pain. And I'll agree with Azraele - if she sits there and is trying to go, but only a bit comes out, yeah, that's probably a urinary tract problem.
I'll admit, I've never heard a cat in heat. However, I think that the sounds she's making sound like she's hurting. I'm surprised too by the very regular intervals between some of the louder meows. Especially the two right between 33.356 and 36.116 seconds - those sound particularly distressed.

Finally, "Urine Ninja." Maybe that could be your new custom user title here. Senior, Diamond, Golden, Elite Member, Grand Nagus, Lifer, Urine Ninja. Yeah, that could work.

Cats don't like that...at all. I usually sleep with my bedroom door locked, sometimes without checking if the cat is in my room. My cat hates to be locked inside a freaking bedroom for a couple of hours...I'm assuming your cat won't like being locked in a bathroom.

The Q-tip advice scares me. I think my cat would claw the hell out of me if I tried anything like that.

It's amusing the difference in cats' personalities. My cats refuse to raise a paw at me. They don't even want to walk on me if I'm in bed, like they're afraid of hurting me. When trying to get them into the carrying case for a vet trip, they won't claw, they'll just crouch down to the ground and spread their legs out to try to keep from being put in. But no attacking tactics of any sort.
